Washington reports a broad strike of machinery and allied metal trades to enforce a nine hour day and wage gains. The Portland mine would have used 100000 tons daily. many mines may close. A major trestle on the Colorado Springs Cripple Creek railroad is swept away and a 65 million gallon flood roars down West Beaver Creek, wrecking the valley.
New York May 20 The Herald quotes J Hamilton Lawie of Washington as saying Democrats of the northwest favor David Bennett Hill for president and Toot J Johnson of Ohio for vice president In his view Bryan has not sought or desired to be a candidate and beliefs the main issue of the next campaign will be tariff He calls free trade the possible solution to the looming industrial upheaval.
Topeka Driving Club plans a matinee and race meet on June 4 at the old state grounds. The program includes Gentlemen’s row race, mile heats best two of three, 2:50 road race for colored participants, automobiles, a newsboys’ pony race, half mile dash, potato race, foot race, and a pie eating contest. Local Topeka homes and interviews are lined up for the event, with an admission fee and free tables and vehicles.
In St Joseph Massachusetts on May 2 nearly all workers from the International Brotherhood of Grev orical Workers walk out. They demand pay from 2.25 to 2.50 per day and a reduction of hours from ten to nine. The schedule operated the Brent railway electric telegraph and telephone company. No replacement workers have yet been sought.
In Scranton on May 20, every machine shop idle as workers strike for a nine hour day and a raise of per cent. About 2 005 men quit, joining Lackawanna road machinists and others out for a week, bringing total strikers to nearly 5 000 in Scranton. Dixson works offer one day and arbitration in wage dispute. Information appears garbled but indicates broad labor action and objections to International rulings.
Reports from San Francisco say Mrs McKinley’s illness has improved but remains a hurdle to travel. President McKinley will stay in California for about a week, with only the immediate party leaving for Canton. Mary Warber and Mrs McKinley will accompany the president to Canton, while Cortelyou and other aides stay or move as required.
