Still balloting as votes tallied show Funston 38 and Buchan 38 with the rest divided. The close totals indicate no clear winner yet and further counting or rounds may follow to determine final results.
Delegates from Allen through Wyandotte counties clash over the nomination. After 14 ballots Funston leads narrowly with Buchan stagnant. Douglas Franklin and Johnson counties decline to back Buchan. Calderhead is named congressman for the Fifth district on the first ballot with a strong showing for Bristow.
The hearing before the board of railroad commissioners concluded today on the general freight rate case. Chairman Vincent said a decision would not come until next week as testimony is transcribed for the board. Proceedings centered on discriminative coal rates and potential monopolistic practices involving the Santa Fe line.
Saur Lace Utah May 14. The trial of H. E. Carter and twenty six others for seizing an engine on the Union Pacific at Lehi last week ended today. Judge Merritt sentenced Carter to five days imprisonment plus a 100 fine. Other defendants received five days in prison with varying fines. Greens River May 18 Judge Riner and U S Attorney Fowler arrived from Cheyenne to hear Idaho industrials. Superintendent Malloy of the Wyoming division reports about forty industrials boarded an east bound freight at Echo Utah today. They were sidetracked and left behind. Marshals were sent from Manston to keep them from boarding other trains. Judge Riner ordered the prisoners moved to Lincoln forthwith. Two companies escorted them on a special train to Boise at 8 o clock.
Capital lodge No. 392 marked its third anniversary at 704 700 Kansas avenue with a 62 minute address by Rev. John A Bright. John Armstrong led ceremonies as members and friends packed the hall for a program of 20 literary and musical numbers and a ladies farce Why they joined bekahs. A minor fire call occurred at Tenth street and Topeka avenue with misdirected fire department response from box 45 to box 25.
A fierce gale on Lake Michigan spurred five vessels to seek shelter near the Milwaukee breakwater while the sunken schooner M J Cummings sank after her anchors failed. Rescuers from the life saving crew attempted to reach the Cummings crew, including a woman stewardess, but were swept away by a huge wave. Other vessels drifted ashore between South Milwaukee and Racine as damage mounted along the coast and in the city.
Plans of county political fixers center on Major J K Hudson chairing the Republican county convention. Hudson, elected as a Highland Park precinct delegate, seeks the state printer nomination while a push to seat Senator Sterne as a state convention delegate unfolds. Contention over Morrill backed delegates and opposition to ranking candidates shapes the committee and seat strategy.
Delegates from West and Southwest travel to Washington for the third Pan American Bimetallic League convention to discuss creating a silver dollar to circulate between the United States and Central American nations to boost trade. Delegates include four from Mexico two from Central American states two from Brazil and one from New Zealand. A.8 Fisk of Denver leads the effort credited with founding the league after touring southern countries.
Temperance activists and County Attorney Cochran of Cottonwood Falls issued subpoenas to 160 men in Cottonwood Falls and Strong City as part of a joint raid. Joint keepers Bonewell and Voltz have fled, with eight or ten more ready to depart.
In tomorrow's Republican county convention the delegation to the state convention will likely support Major Morrill for governor. Hoch supporters shifted to Morrill once Morrill's nomination seemed likely, with many reversing their stance and joining the Morrill ranks. The piece condemns those who only backed Morrill after it was clear he would win. North Topeka remarks conclude by hoping Morrill forgives the opportunists.
Sheriff Burdge balked at a Pike's Peak trip in summer wear. London banker Robert R. Symon and nephew Arthur Lavita passed through Topeka on a Ta Fe train en route to Mexico City. Rev. Charles B Mitchell urged calm about Catholic influence at a Kansas City meeting, while Banta Fe shop managers eye an excursion to Washington and Troost parks, to be pitched at Trades Assembly Hall tomorrow.
Cleveland May 18 miners vow to push until operators restore old scale. President McBride urges peaceful action while VP Penna backs hard battle. Leaders fear odds worsen in business slump. districts in Illinois West Virginia and Pennsylvania to be organized as idle miners aim to pressure contracts. Noon adjournment sine die. Operators hope to present a scale by June to salvage contracts.
Frank J Turner lithographer and alleged counterfeiter was arrested in the Poppendick building on East Sixth Street after officers traced his activity from payments by Joseph Teter. A bench engraving and torn notes, plus a stove burn pile, tied Turner to the $5 silver certificate operation. He appeared unconcerned at jail, playing a banjo as a reporter visited.
A. L. Snyder, a Topeka plumber, sues Lawrence Heating and Plumbing and Kansas Plumbing and Pump in district court for 25000 dollars. He alleges local plumbers including States, Prescott, Allen Mood, Shehan, and A. H. Nooney blocked his business and credit with eastern wholesalers, harming his customers and income.
Weather notes report Kansas dipping to 45 degrees then rising to 59 with warnings of a warm front. Observer Jensioy predicts warmer conditions ahead though a front may reach low lands tonight. No rain expected. winds light with minor sand storms. crops seen at minimal risk. Report also mentions rail disruption from strong winds delaying an eastbound train between Belleville and Goodland.
