The Industrial Army advances into Kansas reaching Horace at 11 in the morning. The train was ditched once but resumed travel. U S marshals with B P Waggener’s special dispatch Salina to confront the commonwealers and halt them.
Reports from Satina Kansas May 10 describe the Cripple Creek commonweal army train ditching near Chivington Colorado forcing repairs and a long move east. Sheriff Hurt asks Governor Lewelling for militia to arrest the group as federal deputies guard the Missouri Pacific line.
A report from Sheridan Lake Colorado May 10 notes industrials rode through at 10 am. Obstructions near Chivington were removed by railroad workers and locals. The Missouri Pacific and other officials pursued legal action while Gov. Lewelling debated militia use.
New York bankers say state bank commissioner of Kangas misinformed about gold clauses. Some banks retain the gold clause, Bank of America prominent, but fewer than twenty percent of New York bank loans use it. Banks and brokerage house loans often require gold note, added as a line in the loan agreement.
Capt. W A Whitaker inspected the light battery at the armory in Wichita with the military board present and reporting the battery in good condition. Rev B L Smith learns Rev J H Hardin will be detained in Oklahoma and cannot preach tonight as announced. Dr J L Gilbert completes chemical exam of the stoursch of William Bensendahl of Smith Center and finds morphine traces. An error in the girls reform school maintenance bill keeps $12,000 instead of $1,200. attorney general says the law stands. Fourth ward Republicans invited to caucus at the court house this evening.
A Senate session on May 10 discusses Coxey and his followers with calls for investigation of police treatment. Allen introduces a bill to repeal the act used against Coxey. Peffer seeks a special committee to study national business depression and relief options. Gordon frames Coxey as paternalistic policy, while Teller supports inquiry and asserts Coxey followers deserve consideration.
In Washington relations with Dr James H. Stone end badly after Congressman John J. O’Neill of Missouri and two companions allegedly struck Stone near a Pennsylva nia Avenue drugstore at 2 a.m. O’Neill was arrested on assault and battery charges, gave a false name Browne, and posted $5 bond. Stone sustained a sore head. Oakland Republicans name delegates for the county convention, with Gibbon chairing the caucus and plans to back Major Morrill for governor.
A miner action halts output in Fleming and Kirkwood as workers suspend work after a mass quitting call. Western Coal and Wear Coal mines join idled operations while other area mines run at full capacity.
Four colored suspects were arrested after a midnight burglary at Samuel Cunningham’s grocery at Eighth and Leake. About $50 in goods were stolen. the front door lock was broken. Captain Gish and Officer Perkins detained Charles Casen, Ernest Brown, Sarah Carmax, and Mary Wade, held on suspicion of the crime.
Mrs. Mary F. E. Lease, member of the State Board of Charities, attended the Kansas institution for the education of the blind board meeting in Kansas City. She arrived exhausted, was treated for nervous prostration, and is reported improved after returning to Wichita.
The May 0 dedication at Fredericksburg honors Mary Washington with President Cleveland in attendance. A grand procession, speeches by Mayor Rowe and Governor O’Ferrel, and a design by architect Wa. J. Crawford highlighted the event. The granite monument stands near the mother’s grave, funded by nationwide contributions led by Mrs Amelia C. Walis and Mrs Margaret Heizel.
