Santa Fe official Barr in Topeka with shop plans and trains
Mr. Bary third vice president of the Santa Fe is in Topeka for talks on securing land for additional city shop improvements. He expects to stay until tomorrow and may remain to Friday. A conference with the Commercial club will be arranged, though Barr said further discussion is unnecessary. He announced a second Chicago to Pacific Coast overland train set for July 1, not continued in summer, and similar to trains Nos. 1 and 2. Barr defended the piece-work system as an incentive for productive workers and noted it benefits skilled Topeka shop staff while weeding out weaker employees. He also addressed doubleheaders, arguing Santa Fe hauls less tonnage per mile than rivals and that competing roads impose greater hardship on their workers. He denied plans to run trains into Portland to challenge the Shasta routes.
