Their courtship began years ago when Eddy’s family moved from Michigan to Australia. Pearl travels unaccompanied with arrangements for safe arrival aboard the next steamship from San Francisco.
Salina citizens plan a grand reception for Company M of the Twentieth Kansas upon their return from the Philippines. The Saline Union urges a banquet and exercises, with local groups coordinating decorations, accommodations, and a Christian aid presence. The Saline County volunteers seek recognition for the soldiers and pledge to provide a proper send off when they depart Salina.
A Washington dispatch says the United States provided a new flag for Cuban manned vessels in the coastwise trade to avoid annexation or recognition steps. The ensign is a blue field with a white union and these ships, formerly Spanish, may continue coastwise work under a regime allowing owners to abstain from allegiance to Madrid. Weather notes forecast brick south to west winds in Chicago tonight and Wednesday.

Chicago Armour Co. denied the stroke and said cables showed he arrived in Hamburg well and then went to Nauheim. A May 9 London dispatch confirmed no stroke and noted improved health after spa treatment.
Denver reports Gov. Thomas denied a Denver News interview that he asked for the return of the Colorado volunteers twice and would renew the request. He said nothing beyond a general comment on government power to call militia for offensive war and that he has been out of the city for several days.

A cable from Manila notes Luna’s march on Mascardo and Aguinaldo’s frantic bid for peace, plus details of the St Tomas engagement and Major Diggles wounded near San Miguel. Nearly 100 delegates and as many visitors attended the opening session of the Catholic Knights of America twelfth supreme council in Kansas City. London March 9 Mrs Joseph H Choate wife of the US ambassador will present Mrs Bates and Miss Bates wife and daughter of Lieut Col Alfred Bates military attache to Mrs Osborne and Mrs John B Mott of Indiana and Miss Ingraham at a royal drawing room event detailing American diplomatic presence in London.
Funeral services for Mrs. Wm. C. Whitney were held at the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Garden City New York after a private home ceremony. Bishop Porter of New York presided though Bishop Littlejohn and Bishop Downe could not attend. Over 300 guests traveled from New York on a special train, with pallbearers named and floral tributes including violets and roses from Mrs. Whitney’s former working companions.
Raleigh report states the Confederate cruiser Relvish ran aground about 20 yards outside the south jetty near Charleston on May 4. She is said to be unhurt and likely to be floated later this evening, with Captain Coghlan declining tug aid.
At Hot Springs Virginia on a May morning the President and Mrs McKinley Dr Rixey and Assistant Secretary Cortell along with Mr Barnes a White House stenographer reached the Homestead. Their train arrived ahead of time and a small party met them at the depot. The group entered the hotel through a side door and were welcomed by Mrs Gage in private apartments. Dr Rixey inspected the bath houses and the President planned to begin baths today.
The state tennis tournament will be held in Topeka this summer with a $50 championship cup offered by O M White of Emporia, owner of the Mit-Way restaurant. The cup goes to a player who wins it three times in succession. Emporia players aim to keep the cup there while Topeka hopes to bring it in during the tourney. The Topeka Tennis Association has organized for the season with many new members and old champions ready to compete.
The twenty round bout in Denver last night between Frank Bartley of Chicago and Matty Matthews of New York ended in a draw. Bartley outpointed Matthews overall with 72 landed blows, 20 to Bartley and Et to Matthews. Matthews showed exceptional endurance with notable work in the ninth, fourteenth, sixteenth and final rounds.
In San Francisco on May 9 United States Immigration Commissioner North refused landing to ten native Filipinos aboard the City of Pekin who were to exhibit in a New York museum. He classed them as contract laborers, denying land rights to 26 total workers. The Filipinos contend they are actors, not laborers, and may appeal to Washington. Also reported is the wreck of the Loch Sloy off Kangaroo Island Adelaide on April 24 with five passengers and twenty-five crew drowned. four escaped, three still missing.
Kansas banks show deposits totaling 32 a state figure near 32 million, with an increase of about 724 thousand over last year. Two Wichita banks recently entered national status, reducing the state total by roughly 500 thousand dollars.
