No arrest yet and papers not served on Governor Morrill. Attorneys insist service will occur. Gov Morrill arrived and stated there is nothing wrong with his conduct, feeling confident and aware of his innocence.
The Topeka Journal reports Governor Morrill faces possible arrest on charges of obtaining money under false pretences. A Populist officer may act as the complaining witness while Waters & Waters prepare documents. repairs to voucher funds and contingency expenditures are discussed.
The text notes money moved from the contingent fund to the general revenue fund and cannot be restored. It states the state treasurer's office reports a tax payment missing, and Governor Morrill still owes the state 805.71 on that transaction.
The second day of the income tax rehearing features Assistant Attorney General Whitney arguing for a reversal of the court's earlier ruling. He asserts that duty has a legal definition and that specific taxes on personal or real property and a specific income tax fall under duties, while a general tax on all personal property does not. Nevada Missouri May 7 A mass meeting of zinc smelter workers appointed a committee to demand wage advances from employers. The move follows earlier promises that wages would rise when ore prices advanced. If demands are not met, about 2,700 men may go on strike.
Wrentra Kansas May 7 Representative Otto Eckstein, member of the House investigating committee, left for Topeka and is very ill here. fears he cannot continue with the committee. Householders counsel objects to proceeding without full attendance of the committee.
The international convention of machinists debated the referendum report. A majority opposed giving 100 delegates supreme power and kept the state rights plan. The silver revolution was not proposed to avoid political entanglement, though delegates largely favor free coinage of silver.
Primitive Methodist conference refuses Rev Jonathan Bell's resignation and expels him amid public shame after the death of Miss Emily Hall in Detroit. Bell's whereabouts remain undisclosed to police.
Panic sweeps the city as rumors of Bank of Montreal suspension trigger a run on banks. Officials report ample gold reserves and rapid payouts while the public converts notes to gold amid unsettled fears. Bankers say no danger to institutions and expect calm by night.
New York Assembly approves a sweeping civil rights measure making it a misdemeanor for proprietors of restaurants hotels bath houses barber shops theaters and public conveyances to deny equal services based on race creed or color. The widow of Senator Hearst of California will be presented in the diplomatic circle tomorrow along with Miss Grace Potter and Miss Bertha Potter and Miss Koby of New York and Mrs Walter Winsas in the general circle.
New York May 7 Judge Brown in the United States circuit denied the application for a writ of removal in the case of Collis P Huntington president of the Southern Pacific Railway company. He is indicted in California for violating the interstate commerce law for having given a pass over the Southern Pacific railway to a man named Stone.
Chicago's Civic Federation reports success expanding a program to place unemployed people in work across the country. About 400 men, women and children have been employed so far, with plans to extend the effort further.
Miss Susan B Anthony passes through Topeka at 11 on the Union Pacific en route to California to campaign for suffrage. In a brief talk she defends the term new woman as a thoughtful, educated, equal partner, says voting rights will come and urges Kansas women to work for enfranchisement.
General Mann er A. G. Blair of the Wheeling & Lake Erie stated that Ohio operators will pay 51 cents per ton based on 60 cents in Pennsylvania fields. The miners had demanded 70 cents, then settled at 60 cents. Blair blamed Pennsylvania operators for seeking lake trade at the miners’ and operators’ expense and said Ohio is united behind 51 cents. A miners’ meeting before May 15 may reconsider the offer to resolve the dispute.
Reports from Belgrade claim Servia faces bankruptcy with public repudiation favored. Royal festivities run lavishly as ex-King Milan receives a pension of £15100 amid grand balls and decorations for ex-Queen Natalie. Police in Topeka arrest two cider sellers amid alleged high alcohol content and more warrants pending. A new magnificent hotel is planned for New York at Thirty-sixth Street and Sixth Avenue, fifteen stories high, opening by August 1, 1906. The Times notes Japan may grant a $10000000 indemnity in exchange for abandoning the Liaotung peninsula.

Noted visitors include Commander-in-Chief Thomas G Law yer Governor Frank D Jackson and Department Commander Newman. A grand parade is planned for 2 p m with camp fires at Davis opera house and three churches.
Acting Secretary of State Ubi orders Consul General Springer in Havana to protest to Spanish authorities over the military court trial of New York World correspondent Manuel Fernte. There is concern for the reporter's safety as the matter is expedited.
The Pittsburgh & St Louis smelter workers strike continues with wage restoration demands rejected. General Manager Dubois posted notices declaring all work suspended until further notice.
