A Georgia Democratic push pledged McKinley Georgia's delegation if he supports free silver. McKinley refused, saying he would quit the party and decline the nomination if the GOP declares for free silver. Separate Berlin dispatch discusses international bimetallism talks and Germany's stance.
In Republican circles Bernard Kelly is report to be chosen warden of the state penitentiary after failed bids for railroad and insurance commissions and a recent talk with Governor Morrill. The only likely rival considers his odds improving as the Dick Chase probe winds down. A Sedgwick burglary last night blew open a post office safe but left the cash box untouched.

Washington dispatch reports Col. W H Rossington a likely United States district judge for the district of Kansas if Judge G Foster retires. Attorney General Olney is said to be pushing the plan to place Foster on full-pay retirement, with Rossington appointed as successor. Foster remains active and will open the April term next Monday.
Miller, Republican candidate for Crawford county clerk, files suit in the supreme court challenging the election of P. O. Rabbitt, Populist, citing 67 voters lacking naturalization, 100+ spoiled ballots in one township, 52 unofficial colored pipe ballots with 44 for Rabbitt and 8 for Miller, requesting the office be awarded to Miller.
A Grand Rapids man named Chas Olson survived severe head trauma after his skull and brain were damaged in a moving-accident fall. Doctors initially thought him dead, but electricity revived him. he regained consciousness, communicated briefly, and began a gradual recovery.
Hughes, a man near middle age, was fined 10 plus costs by Judge Hazen for wife beating. He had been convicted earlier in the term but not sentenced. The judge noted costs already exceed 75, and the offense was aggravated with the wife knocked down and a child custody dispute.
The Debs case moves to the U S Supreme Court with Lyman Trumbull leading the defense for Eugene Debs and associates. They seek a writ of habeas corpus to overturn Judge Woods December contempt sentence for defying an injunction on interstate transport during the Chicago strike. Cy Leland of the Republican state central committee denies any conversation with Senator Rogers about board of public works appropriations. The State v Charles Carson of Nickerson ended with a not guilty verdict by the jury. Carson, charged with first degree murder for killing his wife on Christmas evening at the Colorado hotel in Nickerson, was nearly escorted from the room by friends who believed in his innocence despite surrounding circumstances.
Governor Morrill said he had not received any word from Deputy Warden Markum about declining to take charge of the state penitentiary. He would not specify actions if Merrium declined and noted that suspending Warden Chase would not grant him authority to manage the institution, countering Captain J. G. Waters’s suggestion. A violent street battle broke out in Chicago with 125 boys from Bohemian and other European communities fighting from noon to dusk near Lawndale. About 100 casualties, mostly minor bruises, were reported as players split into Bohemian victors, though causes remain unclear.
Two colored porters at the Union Pacific hotel in North Topeka, Bigby and Mason, were arrested for selling liquor to hotel guests and other applicants. They face two counts each and were unable to post $300 bonds, remaining jailed as witnesses were subpoenaed. Witness list includes Rough Ready, Harry Hitters, Frank Edson, and others.
Sheriff Burdge plans tonight to bring John Rush, Rush’s partner, from Topeka to Arkansas City to join him in jail as Rush provides a complete confession about stealing councilman Griggs' bogey and harness. The confessed partner awaits custody in Arkansas City while Rush is kept company.
Cincinnati reports a tornado last midnight uprooting houses and trees and demolishing property in Delaware and surrounding area. The business block of W. E Krack on Sandusky street suffered most. several injured, no fatalities. Additional notes include horse racing updates and a 1890s legal pardon in Kansas.
A sensational report to Receiver McNulta alleges a large theft from Greentut Management of the whisky trust. Officials sold stock to themselves at 45 cents, creating a nearly two million dollar shortfall. Experts claim book doctoring and altered balance sheets concealed the sale, with $1,024,120 due to stockholders. The report warns of further discoveries as investigations continue and potential action against ex-President Greentrut and others is undecided.

Joel Huntoon Jr son of Colonel Joel Huntoon of Topeka died yesterday in Streator Illinois from lung trouble. He formerly lived in Topeka and had married a niece of Colonel Tweeddale. The body will be brought to Topeka at 11 o clock tomorrow and the funeral will be held at the residence of Cel Huntoon 219 Huntoon arrest at 4 p.m An Election In Sight. Benjamin Roby aged 79 died suddenly of heart disease last night at 7 80 on Kansas avenue near Twenty second street Topeka. He had lived in Topeka nine years and left four other children R T Roby of Sioux City Iowa J H Roby of Bac City Indiana Mrs O E Ferguson of Washita Oklahoma Territory and Mrs M P Furniss of Phillipsburg Kansas. J P Dolliver of He Dodge Iowa and former congressman will attend the Republican league gathering likely on April 20. Secretary Cha EB Gault reported a telegram confirming the date. Dolliver is famed as a top speaker nicknamed the boy orator for his early Iowa political impact.
A prominent Mason J M Aley, Commander-in-Chief of Wichita Consistory No 2 and active in York Rite and Scottish Rite Masonry, died at 7 o clock last night in Kansas City. Funeral ceremonies will be held at the Cathedral tomorrow at midnight.
