Federal grand jury in Wichita has indicted E Williams a McPherson banker and E A Colburn and John Hamilton two McPherson millers for violating revenue law. Williams allegedly urged millers to use a receipt form as a check to dodge the 2 cent war tax. A treasury agent alerted them but was told he did not know his business. Indictments were returned and arrests are expected in a few days.
Imperative orders require the Twenty third Kansas to muster out on April 10. Clerks number four in the preparation but progress is slow due to broken books. If mustered, pay may be delayed about six weeks for rectification and settlement.
In Santiago de Cuba Mr John Sherman moved from the ocean liner Paris to quarters on the U S cruiser Chicago. He was carried on a stretcher and hoisted aboard the ship with nurse and attendant. The Paris left for Cienfuegos and the Chicago would sail later for Fort Monroe where Mrs McCallum plans to meet the party Tuesday.
A gasoline launch carrying the Examiner exploded at Folsom street wharf in San Francisco. Ernest Nelson, the sole aboard passenger, was cast off and burned but not fatally injured as the boiler blast wrecked the boat and shattered windows along the waterfront. The day’s Alameda county edition was not delivered.

Leavenworth March 24 The Leavenworth Standard Publishing Company filed suit against the Times for 36500 damages. The action cites a Times article alleging the Standard was to go into receivership and operated at a loss. Dr F Neely and Colonel D B Anthony are in a heated dispute with pending charges between them.
The blaze at Mrs. Nolan's boarding house at 14 Court Street in Memphis kills Mrs. Chapin a widow and her son Roy Chapin aged 10 and Chester Chapin aged 9 all on the third floor. Also dead are four injured including Robert Campbell with a broken leg and Katie Lloyd wounded. The fire origin is unknown and a second blaze in the same building occurred earlier that night.
Seattle March 24 Rates to Dawson City cut in two by a transportation combine including Seattle Skagway steamers White Pass and Yukon railway and upper Yukon boats. Freight $1 per ton, first class passenger $100, second class $30. If upriver steamers wage rate war, freight drops to $1.40 per ton. Schedule line from Beattie to Dawson about eight days.
Leavenworth March 24 Attorney George Barker said the Hulmon case will probably be tried at the June term in the United States circuit court in the federal building here. The suit involves thousands of dollars with an original claim of 25000 and an insured amount of 19000 rated. The case has been tried twice before under Judge Foster and Chief Justice and will require about 100 witnesses and depositions. The Connecticut Mutual and New York Mutual are still involved.
Col. W. J. Bryan reached Memphis early today. A local committee greeted him and escorted him to the Peabody hotel for a public reception in the afternoon. He will speak tonight at the Auditorium for the Nineteenth Century club before leaving for Little Rock.
John C. Muhr of company E, Westphalia resident, age 21, was shot at Manila today. Morris J. Cohen, another Kansas recruit, enlisted in San Francisco last year on July 1 and was assigned to company B.
A massive fire swept through the Japanning department of the BIC Dangler Stove and Manufacturing plant in Cleveland. A high wind spread flames to the Cleveland Machine Screw company works adjoining the Dangier works, destroying both sites. Losses are estimated at $250,000, with machine screw works insured and Dangier only partly insured. Fire Lieutenant Roth was killed when walls collapsed. his body later recovered. About seven hundred workers lost jobs.
