It instructed a new course of study to be prepared for Kansas teachers, with Hammond Bros bound Illinois course at nine cents, as county superintendents resisted involvement, leading to a revolt at the Illinois course.
Five unknown tramps dead as freight wreck on Colorado and Southern Railroad near Mayne Colorado, after cars plunged into a ditch. Bodies not recovered, wreck caused by broken rail on a small siding. Also notes: temperatures of large cities and several weather figures.
Wesl Clifton Kan March 1 Farmers greet news that the Farmers Cooperative Shipping Company has declared a cash dividend of 5 percent on stock paid before 1903 and 4 percent on stock since that date. The Brat ter Hoffan line system is expanding with a new branch. nearly one hundred farmers hold stock, though solicitors have yet to cover all territory. Local farmers plan to secure a branch in the area.
Representative Memot of Newer York introduced a resolution in the House committees calling for investigation of trusts. It lists exactions by beef, coal, and steel trusts and notes inflated stock, reduced wages, and diminished purchasing power. The resolution seeks stricter laws and enforcement pending new legislation.
E W Hoch returns to Marion with Col Murdock to brief Paul Morton about restoring the old stockman return rule. Murdock advocates reestablishing passes for stockmen while highlighting Hoch may speak on Memorial Day and at Ottawa Chautauqua. Hoch denies political motives in forthcoming addresses and notes a Topeka Commercial Club committee visit about freight rate schedules.

The Drive bridge over Martins Creek may be closed and Fifth Street bridge likely abandoned. Park Avenue widening may be linked to relinquishing Drive and Fifth Street crossings. In Peru Kansas on March 19 a tree fmall cutting and stubbing scrape occurred in dives near Nate Sack Andrews residence. Three men Harry Webster Kilttoo and an unknown man are now fugitives from justice charged with the crime.
County commissioners approve a restricted 30 year franchise for the Topeka Railway company. The approved draft requires county board approval before any tracks or extensions on county roads and highways and requires filing a map of planned extensions. The board had earlier sought a less sweeping grant and insisted on oversight.
Norton Kansas hears murder case against Dewey and two cowboys. Jury retires after brief coverage of trial. Senator Hessin of Manhattan, Captain Waters of Topeka, and General Colby present defense arguments. Proceedings continue into afternoon with extended duration.
Albert Ferguson, a non union hack driver, was shot and mortally wounded by four men described as property strikers who had forced him to the city outskirts. Four assailants escaped after the attack, while other hack drivers faced beatings and a strike breaker’s vehicle was wrecked. no arrests were reported.
In New York this afternoon D J Sully & Co issued a statement via counsel noting they cannot discuss firm assets or liabilities yet but expect to provide details in two to three days. Headley the assignee and organizer of the American Locomotive Co is mentioned. The cotton market shows confidence with bids rising and bales around 350,000. Philadelphia spot interests are strong as the market advances with south reports of limited offerings.

In a fractious party fight, W R Stubbs defeated J R Burrow for chairman of the Reputy Hean state committee amid deep splits between Burton and Hoch factions. Burrow withdrew after a prolonged wrangle as Stubbs won unanimously with Clyde Miller secretary and P I Bonebrake treasurer, while Hoch faced internal opposition and contested proxies.
