A Herald dispatch from Hasananys reports Captain Eulate of the Spanish warship Vizcaya in New York denouncing abuse of Americans by Spaniards in Havana. The Vizcaya sailed near Fern and Montgomery, crews exchanged words heard across the quarterdeck, Spaniards roamed ashore, and visitors boarded the cruiser to inspect guns amid tensions over Havana. The incident prompted protests from the Vizcaya’s captain and continued on page six.
A counterfeiting operation was found in the engine room at Folsom prison. Convicts L H Coyne and James Brown produced large numbers of nickels from Babbitt metal, attempting to flood circulation via outside contacts. Guards recovered dies and crucibles, and coins appeared in Folsom.
Wichita March 11. A judgment against Arkansas City for about $18 000 for hydrant rental on 50 hydrants for six years led to a levy of 27 mills. Taxpayers contested over 10 mills but Judge Williams ruled the 10 mill limit applies to current expenses, not judgments. The court ordered payment of the accumulated debt.
Cleveland on March 1 McKisson announced he would contest Senator Huana’s election to the long term seat after Huana attempted to take his place.
Berlin reports that the Kalo-Chow treaty provides concessions for railway construction and associated enterprises in the Shan region. The agreement is said to invite German involvement in public works and foreign cooperation, expanding German economic access in the district.
London dispatch reports The Morning Post says Japan warned Russia that retaining Port Arthur would invite Japan to keep Wei Hai Wei and nearby islands. It notes the Japanese admiralty sped construction of warships abroad and denied plans to send cruisers from Philadelphia and San Francisco.
The annual state tennis tournament will be held in Topeka around August 10, organized by the Topeka Tennis Club at the southwest corner of Tenth and Fillmore. A special meeting of the club is planned for Saturday at 7:30 by Dobbs & Stoker in the Central National Bank building. Fort Collins Colorado March 11 packs of wolves are doing serious damage to stock in the neighborhood of the Lara mie river in this county. They come down from the timber in packs and raid cattle ranches, killing many calves and yearlings. Stockmen corral their young stock nightly and watch corrals.
A new state bank with capital stock of 10000 is organized at Olda burg, Pottawatomie County, charter filed today. Directors: C W Pagersbers, John Booth, Jacob Wellh, A W Johnson, and D W Johnson. Also charter filed for Pawnee Mining Company with 2000 capital stock to operate in the Kiondike region. Reading Circle books chosen for teachers and pupils, with prices and procurement details.
A clipped letter from Geo L Miller president of the North Topeka temperance work era argues they are not responsible for resources published in the Evening Journal March. He states he refused to sign a constitution by laws and asserts the group remains non pousest Heal.
