In Bradvile Cod a cave in at 400 feet left Chas Rouse and Burt Frye entombed while AF Shepherd was injured. Water draining by a charge of dynamite and a pipe provide communication. a new shaft 75 feet deeper will take about a week to reach the miners.
A dispatch from St Peterburg reports that after negotiations between Russia and Great Britain, the Russian minister in Pekin will withdraw his protest against the Hong Kong contract. The move follows discussions with England.
A War Department dispatch from Manila reports General Grant arriving with the Fourth Infantry and four companies of the Seventeenth. The force sailed via Hong Kong and Nagasaki to reach San Francisco, with details of movements to San Francisco and Manila. In Atchison, Governor Stanley appoints W. D. Casey as judge and J. W. Starr as marshal for the new city court, both nominated for the posts.

Manila March 19. The bodies of Col. William Smith Major B McConvite Capt David S Eli e and 2nd Lt Eugene French, killed in action, were shipped home to Gay by the Scandia with military honors. Major General Lawton arrived on the Grant and reported to Major General Otis before returning to the Grant. Troops aboard the Grant, Fourth Infantry and a battalion of Seventeenth Infantry, will disembark. Twentysecond Infantry reinforcement arrives for General Wheaton’s brigade.
Silver from the U.S. subtreasury is prepared for shipment to Havana for use by Mahan troops. Major Rogers and Captain Littell oversee packing of silver into boxes. vault silver and coins valued in hundreds of thousands are loaded, sealed, and readied for transport. The shipment, moving from New York, accompanies orders from the quartermaster and paymaster departments. The plan calls for packing bullion and specie into secure crates for rail transport to the West end main corridor staging area. The silver vaults output estimated at tens of thousands in age and value will be dispatched tomorrow.
New York report shows foreign commerce for the year ended June 30 fell by 32,200.50 to 40,05,006, with a net loss of 1. Lint. US foreign commerce totaled 865,783,426, while 127,70 n was carried in American vessels and MES abroad. Discrimination by railroads favored southern ports, attracting traffic away from New York.
A Kansas City soldier Williams, nicknamed the Hully of the regiment, was stabbed to death by George Ray after an on train dispute near St Louis. Ray, from Leavenworth, was arrested. Both men were Kansas volunteers en route from Santiago. Williams died of a breast wound. others on the train fell ill with fever after the incident.

Harry Ward, proprietor of the Bar low minstrel organization, seen at Crawford theater last night, has a past as a Topeka newspaper man. Once telegraph editor on the Topeka Commonwealth, his true name is Arthur Dudley, a Leavenworth resident. His parents live in Leavenworth. Dudley also worked on the Leavenworth Times. He left Topeka to become city editor of the Times for years, and has been on stage about six years. For two seasons he managed the Bar low troupe for others, this season he is sole proprietor.
