A nine story building under construction at Forty-sixth Street and Sixth Avenue collapsed due to an explosion. Five dead and 25 injured were reported, with many workers trapped. The collapse also damaged the Patterson hotel rear dining room area. Rescue efforts continued as authorities expected more casualties beneath the debris. A guest, Mrs. Dodge, was said to have been killed and two men were fatally hurt, taken to Bellevue Hospital.
