Hawaiian advices dated June 18 say the crew of the schooner Mokalule, lost after leaving Hanalei for Watawa, island Kauai, arrived safely in Honolulu. They were afloat for three hours before rescue, their ship cargo damaged. A report about King Kunalilo’s tomb is denied. the vault remains undisturbed after opening.
June 26 San Francisco Cala. Among arrivals on the Steamship Bia de Janeiro from Hong Kong were Captain N. M. Dicer of the Baltimore who has been succeeded by Captain J. M. Forsythe and is bound for Melrose Boston area. Captain A. N. Walker of the Concord has been succeeded by Captain Seth M. Arkey and heads to Frankfort Ky. Medical Inspector J. Wise of the Baltimore is bound for Washington. These officers have been detached from duty and ordered home to rest.
Near drowning occurred at Cape May when Prof Willis L. Moore and Prof A Johnson ran into trouble while bathing. Congressman Henry Loudensinger of New Jersey and newspaper man W F Kirkpatrick helped pull them to safety as a crowd gathered and offered cheers.
Chicaro reports the Nippon Maru was quarantined at Honolulu harbor after a death aboard among Chinese passengers from Hong Kong raised grave concerns of bubonic plague. Shipboard authorities investigated and kept the vessel under quarantine en route to Yokohama, with further delays and medical testing planned.
Dispatches from Tacoris Washington report the Northern Pacific has defeated the Oregon Railway and Navigation Company in the fight for the vanishes of the Clearwater valley.
