Twenty four Coxeyites arrived in Topeka under guard to serve a thirty day term in Shawnee county jail. Fined by a federal judge, they are described by Marshal Neely as scoundrels and vagabonds. The group endured a rough transfer from Holliday and attempted escape before settling in for confinement.
Twenty five convicts were fined twenty dollars and jailed at Shawnee after a riot on the military reservation yesterday afternoon. A deputy marshal fired, striking one man who crawled away. about forty escaped as others were recaptured. Company F of the Sixth Cavalry from Fort Leavenworth secured the remaining prisoners, who were brought to Leavenworth for safekeeping with a cavalry guard. United States authorities adjourned court sessions. next Wichita district court opens September first, and Topeka circuit court begins in November. Sanders and engineer W H Llewellyn face Wichita trials in September, with Sanders choosing Wichita over Leavenworth. Sanders has wandered across the west for nine years. he plans to campaign for the Populist ticket this fall.
Erastus Wiman was sentenced in New York to five years and six months in the penitentiary. He gave an interview insisting his guilt would date back a year, and that accusers, knowing what they know now, were co felons for a year. His friends hoped he would not need long prison association with criminals.
June 21 Pittsburgh. The pattern of disagreement among sheet manufacturers prompts a possible July 1 work stoppage that could affect about 12,000 workers across the mills. A new conference is planned though no amicable settlement seems likely as Jones and Laughlin reportedly refuse to recognize the Amalgamated association in the future. Banks and capitalists in Cincinnati react to a Morgan circular directing the sub-treasurer to secure gold and exchange it for new paper currency in $100,000 multiples. Ohio Valley Bank promised $50,000 today, but premium prospects may hold coin. Investors shift contracts to gold, others plan to do the same. In New York, bankers meeting discussed exporting gold and left each bank free to decide how much to part with for export, aiding the government in an emergency.
Captain O'Brien arrived at the commonwealth camp from Emporia and says seventy more will join tomorrow. Forty men are present now, swelling the force above one hundred.
