Inside Topeka dispute over Governor Lewelling's renomination grows as anti administration factions mobilize. Suffrage debate heats. Annie Diggs backs a platform plank while Populists push new ticket ideas. Western delegates arrive after lower railroad rates take effect. anti fusion proclamations circulate among delegates.
G Clemens in Topeka says sentiment rises against Lewelling from voters who will influence the convention not the Topeka kickers. He backs administration work but fights the combination to oppose Dick Chase and associates. Entertained Saturday night then left for return. Co H J Taylor the colored Democrat of national repute arrived in Topeka and spoke with local colored Democratic club members at 718 Quincy street. He departs tomorrow to attend the Populist convention and will be an interested spectator.
The joint scale committee of presidents and miners met in executive session to seek a uniform wage scale. Proposals include 69 cents for Pennsylvania and 60 cents for Ohio with a rise to 79 cents in September. some operators favor dealing with organized labor. Cripple Creek deputies move to Colorado Springs as mine protection continues and clashes flare elsewhere.
A St. Laura conference of national labor officers organized by the Knights of Labor aims to unite work among labor bodies. Key figures present include T. H. Powderly, Samuel Gompers, J. R Sovereign and P. J. McGuire. Executive sessions and a laws committee were established to draft an agreement plan.
Carrie Chapman Catt headlines a suffrage program at Hamilton Hall hosted by the Women's People's party league. The evening begins at 8 p.m. with speeches by Kansas women, followed by Catt's address and a series of topics from "The Truth" to "Our Foremothers" delivered by various women.
