The Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railway seeks court action to void a depot deal with the Chicago Elevated Terminal Railway, arguing the Santa Fe pays 650000 yearly rent for property it says it owns and that no consideration was paid by the terminal company. The Union Trust Company of New York, trustee under a 150000000 bond issue, petitions federal court to set aside the transfer and halt further recognition of the contract until the case is resolved.
The Fifth Ward of Wichita Kansas voted to secede from the city government over the removal of a fire depot and other services. If permitted to depart it would form its own municipal government, avoid metropolitan police law, and complicate governance with remaining city wards. Plus reports of a heavyset trap shooter Ashton Webb found dead in Ohio and church services announced in Spencerport.
Senator Matthew Stenley Quay declares support for either Reed or McKinley for president depending on who is more available when the national convention convenes. He notes friendship with Senator Cameron, denies backing his colleague, and opposes silver at 16 to 1.
From Safle a special cablegram reports 5009 insurgents clashing with Turkish troops on the Turko Macedonian frontier. Turkish loss given as 610. In contrast at Portia Bulgaria is urged to suppress Macedonian revolutionary committees in Sofia and other places. Rapprochement between Russia and Bulgaria causes anxiety.
Wichita reacts with anger after saloon closures lead to wheels stopping and services halting. Insurance czar Mr. H. Clartson of Topeka warns if two fire companies are not reestablished, fire insurance rates will rise. Beer or nothing drives local tension and political pressure.
