Explosion at Laflin and Rand Powder Plant Kills Fifteen

July 12 Pompton Lakes reports a massive explosion at Laflin and Rand Powder works. Fifteen men killed including Civil War era volunteers detailed to guard the plant. many others wounded. Military guards sealed the site as wounded were rushed to Paterson hospitals by special train from Dover.

Pathetic Landing Of 692 Spanish Prisoners At Seavey's Island

The 692 Spanish prisoners from Admiral Cervera's squadron, transported aboard the St Louis, arrived at Seavey's Island in two hours under Col. Ferney's direction. Weakened and ragged, many wore fragments of uniforms or table cloth, some too feeble to stand. The Cristobal Colon crew arrived better clothed, with ships bags of clothing. Forty were taken to hospital. ten lieutenant officers and other ranks were later assigned to barracks. The emotional farewell to Captain Merow moved onlookers to tears as officers and men embraced. The island, near Portsmouth, will be enclosed by a stockade with quarters for 1600 and a marine guard.
