In Topeka and Lawrence areas the Kansas river rises rapidly causing streetcar and rail damage. Water reaches past banks, flooding low lands and threatening bridges, depots, and the Wolff packing plant. Workers pump basements as crews brace weakened dams and washouts impact rail lines.
The south end approach of the Grantville bridge over the Kansas river was washed out early this morning. County officials worked to secure the site as the water formed an eddy and carried the makeshift rope away. The bridge spans remain safe for now.
Manhattan dispatches report a partially carried away bridge timbers at the brick yards west of Topeka as high water and drift dislodge unfastened components. Blue River in Manhattan rises nineteen feet and could threaten area. Rock Island trains disrupted by Washouts at Beatrice Fairbury and Clifton causing through trains from Chicago to Denver to reroute via Lincoln.
Missouri River near Kansas City rises toward danger as gauge hits 2.17 feet and may climb another foot in 24 hours. Rail delays persist with general rainfall across Kansas Nebraska and western Missouri. Dam at Concordia holds while vast flooding expands across Rice and surrounding areas. A man drowned in the Kaw river at St Marys and railroad embankments suffer. Atchison reports multiple river breaches and rail blocks. Temperatures listed for major cities.
The National Educational Association convention in Minneapolis saw a morning general session and department meetings. Officers were nominated and ratified, with Charles W. Eliot of Harvard elected president, W. M. Davidson of Kansas treasurer, and outgoing president W. M. Beardahear of Iowa to vice president. Speakers included James W. Wilson on education, Jacob Schurman on the Philippines, and Carrie Chapman Catt on women’s education and coeducation.
Pittsburg July 10 a Cambria Coal mine near Johnstown Pa exploded sending six hundred men entombed about two miles from the opening. Three escaped and report many dead with initial estimates ranging from 100 to 250.
Seattle reports indicate Harry Tracy, Oregon convict, remains at large with guards posted around Lake Union. A Washington sheriff suspects he has Merrill and investigators pursue leads from Renton to Black River Junction while the chase stalls and rumors spread of accomplices and sightings in Kent and Auburn.
In Chicago on July 10 a large turnout of ethkir ae freight handlers rejected the railroad terms and voted to maintain the strike. Polk Local Union and Western Local led the walkout after union president Curran urged acceptance, but the vote favored resistance. Five strikers were arrested in connection with the earlier murder of Jo in Landers. a delegation urged remaining nonunion workers to quit work.
A large Emporia delegation arrives in Topeka to pursue revocation of Dr. William Meffert's medical license. The board hearing, delayed by absent members, proceeds in the state house as charges detail alleged abortion coercion, lewd conduct with former wife, and alleged immoral acts with young women. Prosecution is led by state officials with defense by Emporia attorneys as witnesses testify hourly.
