Governor Morrill orders Wichita saloons and all disorderly houses closed. Police commissioners vow strict enforcement, stating they will resign or comply if needed. Governor aims to discuss enforcement with commissioners as tempers flare and temperance forces prepare to sustain closures.
Governor Morrill said he was told saloons at Fort Scott had been closed since the current board was appointed, with a few jobs briefly open. In Kansas City and Topeka he and county authorities were enforcing the law, with saloon keepers and violators arrested and fined as fast as they reopen.
A fierce cyclone swept through several counties including Morgan and Georgi Kitts Ten-Another near Chickasha I T killing multiple people. Homes, barns, and crops were leveled at Martin plantation and Robertson plantation. Perry family trapped under timbers and badly hurt. Survivors report at least ten deaths and many injuries with extensive property damage.
A tornado struck Canton and nearby areas causing property damage and injuries. James Snyder and two others were buried under a barn wreck. Snyder had an arm broken and is not expected to recover. The high school building sustained severe damage and many farmhouses were damaged. no loss of life reported. Multiple towns reported wind, hail, and flood effects with widespread damage to crops and structures.
The time for deposit of bonds and stocks of the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe under its reorganization plan expires today. Deposits will be accepted only with a 1 percent penalty on par value, though the reorganization committee may later refuse further deposits. Denver to Pueblo to Colorado Springs round trip by Santa Fe costs 19 dollars.

Seven year old Willie Peach, son of a Santa Fe machine shop worker, fell under engine 216 near the shops just before 11 this morning while playing with other boys. His left leg was amputated at the Santa Fe dispensary on East Fourth Street. the Peach family lives at 120 Adams Street.
Governor Morrill issued an order removing W. J. Hurd of Holton as penitentiary director and appointed M. M. Beck of Holton Editor of the Holton Recorder as his successor. Hurd was summoned to appear Saturday. his attorney protested removal unless charges are conviction through legislative inquiry. J. J. Barnes of Pratt faces hearings Friday with expected removal.
Arraxta July 8 Judge Thomas G. Lawson of Georgia’s Eighth District gives a lengthy interview in the Journal. He backs bimetallism but warns free coinage of silver would lead to silver monometallism, with only silver money and silver-redeemable paper. He favors gold or a dual system with optional choice, and says the silver standard would depress southern prosperity by cutting metal values and raising foreign goods prices.
A severe storm crippled telegraph lines in Milwaukee and surrounding areas, leaving long distance telephone service as the sole quick link to the outside world. Western Union and Postal and Milwaukee Telegraph networks failed, forcing railroads to handle the surge of messages and press dispatches. The outage recalls the New York blizzard disruption that halted electric communication.
Funeral services for REL French were held at 2 pm yesterday at the First Presbyterian church. Rev. Alderson delivered the sermon. Knights Templar and Blue Lodge conducted the service at the grave. About 70 Knights Templar in uniform, 150 Blue Lodge members, and similar numbers from AO U W attended. Carriages numbered about forty.
The Committee to Investigate the State School Fund met at Copeland to organize at 4:40 this afternoon. Four of seven members were present, delaying final organization until tomorrow if more members do not arrive. Members present included Representatives Hilton Osborne Mopkins Fitzgerald Funk and Tucker. Senators Brown Carpenter and Dillard were absent. The legislature-appointed panel said they would work without pay.
