Tillotson Named National Committee Chairman by Free Silver Republicans
D C Tomstann of Topska was chosen chairman of the national committee by the Free Silver Republicans. Tillotson’s selection surprised Kansan factions as his candidacy was not widely known. Lawrence of Il Dorado held the prior post, and Wilerson had served as Kansas committee secretary. Tillotson, born in Indiana, moved to Kansas in early life and led Topeka city schools before practicing law. He later served as city attorney during the Decker marriage bank dispute and has been active in fusion politics. Much national committee work will occur in Topeka.

Blood Soaked Stand at Pekin Trapped Ministers Hope Survives
A dispatch from Consul General Goodnow revived hope that the legationists and their staff may still be alive in Pekin after weeks of siege. Japan plans a major push with international forces, and indemnity talks shape the cost of the campaign as European powers back Tokyo’s lead. The broader force will press Pekin while Chinese casualties mount in the Shanghai reports.

Coal Company Appeals Case Involving Miner Union Delegate
The Western Coal Company appealed a U S circuit ruling over John F B Reese, a national miners union delegate involved in last year’s southeastern Kansas strike. Reese, jailed briefly on an injunction violation, was released by Judge Thayer after an earlier hearing, with the company filing papers this morning seeking review.
