A major party convention dominates headlines as delegates gather to nominate their candidates for the presidency and the vice presidency. Speakers, platform debates, and key endorsements shape the campaign’s momentum and public expectations.
The Democratic national convention opens in St Louis with John Sharp Williams of Mississippi slated to set the keynote. Festivities feature California Hearst banners, Bryan cheers, and eight minutes of uproar as Williams is escorted to the platform and introduces temporary officers.
In St Louis on July 6 Tammany swung back to oppose Parker after briefly backing him. Dowling Murthy and Towne declared Parker cannot be nominated, claiming 490 votes against him. Other leaders at Parker HQ predicted nomination on later ballots while Ohio and Minnesota factions groped for allies and shaped delegations.
