Provisions are made by economizing space as one hundred extra tickets are sold today, revealing higher demand and optimized seating.
Kansas newsmen gather in Topeka as Republican leaders mark events in the seventh district. Morgan predicts W. J. Bailey wins the Seventh’s gubernatorial race while Troutman remains strong statewide. Capt W H Mitchell long active in Be loit politics and Mitchell County Republican committee. Reported landslide vote shows Wichita favored for the Republican state convention with 21 for Wichita and 10 for Topeka. Postmasters and regional politicians attribute defeat of Topeka to Lincoln post G A R treatment and anti Topeka sentiment. Boss busters and regional interests weigh in as supporters discuss venue shifting from Topeka to Wichita.
One of the last men to secure a seat at the Kaneas Day banquet was General Hugh Cameron, a well known Kansas hermit from Camp Ben Harrison. Cameron mingles with politicians and is seen as a keen political operative. The Atchison delegation gathers in Topeka backing Captain S. H. Kelsey for state auditor and James Chisham leading the delegation with C. D. Skinner, Shereld Ingalls, R. M. Chart and W. D. Gilbert. Gilbert says he cares for Clark while Clark watches Ingalls and Ingalls keeps Walker ready for his speech tonight as all eyes turn to Chisham for political movers.
Visiting Faikclane is told of the Shawnee delegation position while Topeka hosts at the Kansas Day banquet. Many locals assign seats to visitors, and even after Secretary Valentine added 50 cavess, demand for meats remains high, outstripping supply as politicians seek unassigned guests.
In Topeka for the Kansas Day club events, Senator Simon of Caldwell observes the political scene, with remarks on past races and current ambitions. J W Benson of Gove counts his county well represented, while A G Mead of Beloit is eyed as a possible dark horse. The sixth district faces a potential deadlock and the club meets at 5 pm to elect leadership.
Boston fire early today at Fleet Street Italian lodging house kills nine occupants and injures four who jumped from windows. Proprietor Louis Dilato and family named among the dead along with several Desco and Donato relatives. loss estimated at a few hundred dollars.
In The Hague the premier Dr Kuyper confirmed A J Balfour’s statement on Britain’s offer to aid peace in South Africa while preserving secrecy. Dutch note contents not disclosed until a reply arrives. Bost delegates claim no knowledge of the note. Also reports on temperatures in several cities and a Kansas forecast for snow possible tonight and Thursday.
Washington January 29 the navy department released Admiral Schleys appeal to the president in which he asks review of the court of inquiry findings. He contends the court erred on command and credit for the victory at Santiago and demands a clear opinion from the majority on key questions. Continued on third page.
