Croft Case Witness Testimony At District Court

Mrs. Robert Stone testified as a principal witness in the Croft case in district court Friday. She described being near the Croft yard at night and watching a hired man named Levi Calkins go to the Croft place in a hack to gather evidence. She attempted to corroborate his statements but could not identify the hack. Stone said she was at the corner near the Crofts yard as it grew dark and remained until around 10 23 o clock. She observed no decisive clues and noted Mrs. Croft served refreshments at the Croft house. Stone and her husband admitted tapping the Croft telephone wire in hopes of obtaining evidence, a point sharply scrutinized by defense attorney Hungate. The cross examination yielded mostly circumstantial details with little change in testimony.
