Edward Stephens, a Black educator and philanthropist, was denied permission to ride the elevator at the Copeland gathering place, a Republican-hosted event, forcing him to walk upstairs to see a White friend.
Edward Stephens organizer of the Industrial Christian Institute for colored people plans a suit against Col J C Gordon proprietor of the Copeland hotel for denying him access to the elevator. Stephens, a well educated immigrant with British accent, says the incident raises civil rights questions in Kansas and could involve damages.
President Harrison arrived at Arlington early this morning accompanied by private staff and took quarters. He planned no public remarks, would call on President Cleveland to pay respects, and expected to return to Indianapolis soon.
In a session of the Colcagy Woman's elah racial tensions surfaced as Mrs Frank Barr Williams, a noted colored woman, was elected to full club membership after a long dispute over a woman's complexion. Dr Sarah Hucketton and Mrs Catharine Waugh Metal lough backed the effort while few members threatened to resign in protest.

A Constantinople dispatch reports a Russia Turkey offensive and defensive pact that would close the Dardanelles to all warships. The treaty, signed at Constantinople and ratified in St Petersburg, draws France toward the alliance and alarms Britain as Russia expands into the Mediterranean.
Justice Brewer doubts if the Kansas mortgage case on the 1893 redemption law can be heard soon. Frank B. Thomas, in charge, received a Washington letter from Thomas F. Doran and Judine seeking an early hearing. The note says the court may advance the case but result remains uncertain.
New York reports Emperor William and Prince Leopold have recovered after a period of tension. The dispute centered on Prince Leopold’s conduct and remarks toward the empress’s sister Mrs Helland's Mother Pond. McBH Helland departed yesterday to attend his mother-in-law Mrs P Willis's funeral in Dresden New York.
A severe sleet storm from a Keion East of Chicago to Central Kansas cuts Chicago from telegraphic links with eastern and southern cities. Wires iced thick. embargo on dispatches persists. State Journal Special Correspondent reports from Wasutacton Jan 24 that the committee on Indian office has reported favorably the claim of Robinson and Grubbs of Holton against the Pottawatomie Indians for a thousand dollars for lumber furnished.
New York June 24 Col Hubert Ingersoll back from lecturing abroad dismisses prayers for his conversion as ineffective. He says prayers do not change his mind and insists his intellect remains sound and unchanged. He also notes gratitude for the prayers and compares a girl squeezing a hand to the prayers that did not change him.
The World reports auxiliary Salvation Army members in America protest removal of Commander Balington Booth. They threaten to withdraw support and may petition London, with plans to declare the Army in America independent of English control. Booth would be invited to lead the new division if accepted.
Dr Hogeboom reports Kellam remains in poor general condition with bronchitis and fever causing restlessness. He notes slight improvement in sensation in the lower limbs, now reporting light foot pain, while L Thompson improves daily and plans to rest comfortably. The physician estimates Kellam may be able to attend to business in about two weeks.

Trial connected to the January robbery at Howard’s Hardware on 27 Kansac avenue involved Monard Nigro War bet we Meek p.m. Ben Mutchinses among five defendants bound over to district court. Morrison testified Hutchinson and another man left the store about eight p m and that two others may have been inside. Witnesses described knives and attempted sales linked to Hutchinson’s associates.
