Private charitable bodies struggle to aid destitute families after Illinois Steel Company idles many workers in South Chicago. Absent jobs leave 1,200 employees and their dependents with little food or fuel while merchants fear closures. Community volunteers report long hours and heavy caseloads as relief efforts attempt to keep pace with growing need.
A New York report says clothing manufacturers have formed the National Clothiers Association to foster the US industry, standardize customs, reform abuses, and share reliable trade information. Officers include Samuel Rosenthal, Alfred Hoekstader, Adolph Nathan, and Jaci S Cheur with a board featuring Abram J. Kata and others. Firms in the pact claim $350 million annual output and pledge to end long credits and excessive rating while preserving business freedom.

Senator Forney will introduce a joint resolution in the senate to submit a constitutional convention question. Populists are divided with ex governor Lewelling opposing, and Harris King and Forney supporting. Prohibition remains a dividing issue as W A Harris and L P King back a new constitution while Hanna cites expense at about $700,000.
Finney of Wowison presents a resolution plan in the house to abolish costly boards including grain inspection, oil inspector, forestry station, and the board of public works. The aim is to consolidate penal institutions, eleemosynary institutions, and educational institutions under single boards to reduce taxes and improve investment conditions.
Governor Lewelling says the legislature has no right to instruct him on appointments and duties. He urges the governor to proceed with his work while letting lawmakers act on pending bills. The motion to instruct the governor was sent to the committee on state affairs after opposition from Lewelling.

Acting President Monsarrat confirms reports of a railroad deal uniting the Columbus Hocking Valley and Toledo with the Wisconsin Central Flint Pere Marquette and Norfolk and Western to create a line from Lake Superior iron and Northwest grain outlets to the Atlantic at Norfolk. Terminal facilities in Chicago are arranged for. both the Wisconsin Central and Norfolk & Western are in receivership.
A Kamaran Island report states two bubonic plague cases near the Red Sea coast. The island lies off Arabia, with British and Russian authorities imposing a strict quarantine as health concerns spread from Bombay.

They claim no formal summons and cite other business in Washington including Texas fever cattle cases before the Supreme Court.
Twenty two Republican lawmakers announce they will abstain from tonight's Copeland caucus to avoid endorsing a United States senate candidate. The Burton faction needs 38 votes to secure a nomination, but many members insist they will not be bound by the caucus outcome and can resist endorsement.
A mass meeting of ex Union soldiers at Lincoln Post hall on January 23, 1897, urged Republican lawmakers to elect an ex Union soldier to the U.S. Senate. The resolution favored Gen I Caldwell for his record and loyalty, aiming to harmonize the party and honor Kansas.
