London January 19. The Pall Mall Gazette reports with deep regret that William E Gladstone is in a critical condition at Cannes. The visit by officials has produced no improvement, and the news has caused widespread excitement in London as observers await further details.
Leavenworth January 18 Clyde Mattox a free man is pardoned, meeting his mother Mrs W W Hatch for the first time in four months after the pardon, amid emotional scenes at the National Hotel. Mrs Hatch declares unwavering belief in his innocence and credits persistence and justice.
The Pallofan Gazette reports Mr Gladstone in critical condition after a Cannes stay. Mrs Hatch recalls long months since his setback and praises friends and officials who supported her and her son amid three trials.
Belfast dispatch reports the British steamer Herbert from Leith foundered about six miles from Gunnsland. The captain was saved while seven other crew members are believed lost. The incident occurred on January nineteenth.

Chicago January 19. The alleged wife murderer Chris Merry showed no hope of escaping a galVins verdict before his defense. In a heated outburst he called his attorney a hypocrite and demanded the scaffold over God. Prosecutors pressed to prove Merry insane while James Smith, charged as Merry’s confederate, had his case moved from the jury but the motion failed.
Fire swept through a vacant building and spread rapidly in Randburg on Rand street. Over 30 structures were consumed within an hour, including the post office and major stores, risking up to $10,000 in damage. No injuries occurred as residents and firefighters halted the blaze by tearing down buildings and moving them aside.
In Chicago on January 19 a free-for-all erupted near Judge Gars court as Adolph Lustgert’s murder trial drew a crowd of 400 to 500. Two guards were beaten and spectators clubbed when a door rush swept the room. Police fenced off the throng and cleared the court after a tense clash.

Cause of failure not given. Snow storm reports show general statewide snowfall from half inch to two inches with no drifting or railroad delays.

In Algiers on January 12 students began a violent anti Hebrew demonstration that spread from France. Police dispersed the crowd after the unrest erupted yesterday evening.
A fragment from a historic report notes Von Funcke, German military attaché, removed months before Dreyfus. He carried a list of French contacts in German intelligence hidden in a leather bed, later compromised when a woman of ill repute obtained the document and delivered it to the Foreign Office.
In Washington Senate, Mr West Missouri gave notice to take up the Teller resolution at the morning business. A joint resolution proposed a commission survey for a ship canal from Lake Michigan’s lower area to the Wabash River and was referred to the Commerce Committee.
Annapolis Md Jan 19 The initial U S Senate ballot produced no choice with Gorman leading the field at 44 votes and several others ranging from 1 to 6. Totals show 113 votes cast of which 4 were abstentions.
San Francisco January 19 Preparations for California's golden jubilee mark the fifth anniversary of the discovery of the yellow metal. Festivities begin Monday next and run all week with county contributions and a mining fair billed as a major western exposition. Governor Todd designates the opening day a holiday and public schools will be closed during the festive week.
Washington January 19 The letter carriers service debate continued with Mr Hoar urging an extra appropriation to avert delivery cuts. Mr Allison chair of the appropriations committee warned of a deficit in administration of the free delivery system and questioned fund distribution or the Postmaster General's estimates to Congress. Through Santa Fe Late The Chicago through train from California No 2 due at 5 o clock will not reach until about seven o clock the evening. Delay from the Santa Fe Pacific tunnel fire near Williams Arizona forced transfer of passengers from eastbound No 2 to the westbound No 1 which doubled back at the tunnel ends. The delay was not of great length and passengers were conveyed.
Miss Harriet Keith Owens, daughter of Mason D. Owens, kills herself with a pistol at Crab Orchard Farm near Vancesville Kentucky. Report notes she had poor health, attended church events, and was described as bright. tragedy followed a sudden act after reading news. local prominence of the Owens family.
New York reports over thirty dishonest Adaruim X-Prese company workers in the city stole between 500 and 3 000 dollars from mail shipments. Many drivers and helpers have been discharged and additional arrests are expected as the company seeks recourse.
