A Newcastle Colorado fire报告 says the Wheeler mine of the Colorado Fuel and Iron company was burning after shift start. An explosion frightened workers and deadly fumes hindered escape with fears of casualties. Company officials were notified from Denver. All men reportedly escaped as of the later dispatch stating the fire was confined to one room.
Governor Stanley names George Kunavel of Harvey as Chairman and Reuben Vincent of Washington and J M Snyder of Jefferson to the state board of charities. All are Republicans and old robbers. They replace Senator Jumper, Frank Shane, and W J Street. Dolan of Latvia and Wheeler of Concordia remain as other two members. Grant Hornady of Port Scott expected to be appointed to the vacancy and chair.
A dam under the Wilson Avenue bridge near Cleveland began to cave in early today. Water backed by the damaged dam flooded flats, threatening large plants including Standard Oil, Cleveland Paper Mills, and Flick slaughterhouse. Police and fire crews worked as the bridge pier collapsed, with possible total dam failure looming and desks of workers narrowly escaping. A Guthrie Oklahoma dispatch reports Acting Police Chief A. C. Bishop was killed by an accidental gun discharge at police headquarters.
The Methodist Episcopal bishop to Africa, Joseph Hartzell of Cincinnati, sails from Liverpool for Africa after a long conference with Cecil Rhodes. Rhodes granted lands and buildings concessions and promised cooperation to develop industrial missions among natives. Hartzell and Mrs Hartzell may visit the Rhodesian home near Capetown in July and discuss Anglo American relations and universal peace.
Denver January report notes a platform two feet high collapsed under crowd weight as Colonel Bryan and Mrs Bryan prepared to depart to Lincoln. The incident caused brief confusion but no panic. several spectators sustained minor scratches and bruises with no serious injuries.
British bark Austria reaches Boston from Manila with a crew fatality and notes from the Dewey era. A crew member, Tackcutt, died after falling from aloft near the South Shoal lightship. The vessel carried rock ballast and Cavite fortifications timber captured during operations against Spanish forces.

Mankato Jan 18 voters approved municipal bonds to fund a city owned water works system. Senator Helm introduced it in the Senate and it passed yesterday. In the House, Wy of Lincoln county moved an emergency declaration. Jaquins opposed as the bill was not printed. The emergency was approved and the bill passed 4 to 1, claimed invalid due to no section-by-section reading.
Representatives Seaton Mason and Wheeler were named by Speaker Osborn to form a special committee to survey the reform school. Seaton said the move aims to identify immediate actions for the boys and society, noting the superintendent has resigned and the institution is chaotic with about 100 inmates.
Harrisburg report notes the January 18 joint session tally for United States senator with Quay eight listed votes and several Republican contenders. The count shows Quay leading among multiple candidates, but the necessary 125 votes not yet reached in the effort to select the senator.

Hartford delegates in joint convention re elect General Joseph R Hawkey as United States senator for six years The two chambers of the Connecticut assembly met to confirm the selection in January 183 The action names Hawkey as the new senator for a six year term with the assembly’s vote aligning in a united session.
President McKinley asks Congress to award gold medals of honor to the Bear expedition participants and overland rescuers led by Captain Francis Tuttle, praising their valor in Arctic waters and the relief mission to 275 distressed whalers. The message also seeks rewards for W. T. Lopp and native herders who aided the relief.
Four boys aged seven to ten died after a sled ride on a hill near South Giteon hamlet Foster. The ice broke on a mill pond, the sled and all but one fell through. The survivor alerted others but time was lost. bodies were recovered.
The Kokomo city council plans a drastic curfew ordinance naming mothers who abandon their duties. If a child returns home to find no mother, the dereliction would be reported to the mayor who may admonish the mother at the card table and finish the game if he is inclined.

In New York on January 15 Theodore Albany a Western Union operator aged 31 and his wife Carrie were found dead from gas asphyxiation in a Third Avenue hotel where they lived since June. Officials suspect no foul play and say the deaths appear self-inflicted. The family seemed happy and unrelated to any criminal act.
