A breakfast for relatives followed in the refectory with attendees Mrs Anna Hinrichs Herman and Christo Hinrichs and Bernard Kiemien erg among the guests.

Fire Inspector Ful kerson indicated possible action against Superintendent Johns over a claim a wrecking crew from George Auber Company smashed vents on the roof of the Iroquois theater to destroy evidence of alleged negligence. Inspector Wulkerson locked the ventilators and subpoenaed several real estate board figures who say they knew of the vents being smashed after the fire. Fuller Construction built the theater.
Des Moines Iowa January 4 fire broke out in the capitol building attic from an electric wire causing more than a quarter million dollars in damage and delaying the twenty ninth general assembly. High flames overwhelmed water pressure forcing firefighters to abandon upper floors as the house chamber ceiling collapsed and flames spread to the senate chamber before 2 pm the building a twenty year old brick and stone structure valued near three million dollars was brought under control.
Twenty six men including former Attorney General Eugene Engley union counsel Guy Miller and Western Federation of Miners VP J B Williams were placed aboard a northbound train under military guard and sent beyond San Miguel county. They will not be allowed back while martial law remains in effect.
Rev Boward Everett Hale delivered the invocation at the Senate opening on January 4 wearing ecclesiastical robes. He referenced the death of Mr Hoar and the Chicago disaster in his prayer. Mr Lodge announced he would address the Senate on the Panama question tomorrow. At the House opening the prayer asked for peace between Japan and China and noted Mr Steculant’s resignation.
George H Bowhay was granted a divorce from Evelyn Bowhay in Santa Fe court. The petition cited abandonment as the cause. Both parties failed to appear. Bowhay attended with a clerk. Foreman Goodhue of the Santa Fe roundhouse was appointed foreman city, to be succeeded at Emporia by A. J. Cleveland.
Guilford Dudley Sr retires from banking after 34 years. The Dudley bank at 519 Kansas Avenue transfers deposits and assets to First National Bank, with Dudley and cashier W. O. Ewing maintaining desks until premises vacated. Dudley started in 1867, endured the 1873 panic, and kept funds paid in cash to creditors.
London January 4 The Daly Paper prints an interview with war correspondent George Pope recounting Pope's remarks on not interfering in politics unless it yields good. He says he communicated with President Roosevelt and received a courteous and cordial reply from him.
Washington Jan. 4 The senate committee on military affairs reported favorably the nomination of General Leonard Wood to major general by a 7 to 2 vote. Affirmative senators were Proctor Warren Foreker Quarles Alger Cockrell Pettus. negatives were Scott Blackborn. Proctor not present but authorized vote. Hawley and Hate absent.
In Omaha on January 4 the trial of United States Senator Charles Dietrich opened in federal court. Dietrich and Postmaster Jacob Fisher of Hastings face charges of conspiracy to violate law by an alleged payment for an appointment. Defense argues five counts include misjoinder and merging of conspiracy with the substantive charge and that the indictment fails to state a crime. Judge Vandeventer and Judge Munger ordered arguments on the demurrer heard immediately, then took the matter under advisement after about an hour.
Washington reports the president sent to the senate the nomination of William H. Taft of Ohio to be secretary of war. The president also nominated Luke E Wright of Tennessee as civil governor of the Philippine islands and Henry B Ide of Vermont as vice civil governor. Taft arrives in Tokyo for official reception with the emperor and empress.

Commander will contact Minister Allen at Seoul and may order troops to Seoul to protect the American legation if needed. Dowager Empress of Korea dies, Allen informs State Department.
