An infernal machine exploded at the New Albany Mississippi railroad depot injuring five men, some fatally. The device, encased in wood and set off by lifting the lid, had been sent from Molly Springs to a party at New Albans under murder indictment. the railroad agent and a telegraph operator were among the injured.
Secretary Alger released a partial list of regiments and other units slated for muster out of service following the Paris peace treaty slowdown. The roster includes twelve full regiments, two independent companies, and three heavy artillery batteries totaling about 10,000 men, with assignments in Alabama Huntsville and Anniston. Texas Third at Ft. Clark. California Eighth at Beneces barracks with batteries B and C. California artillery.
In New York on January 4, officials reveal the Whitney syndicate has obtained control of Edison Electric Teuminating, uniting under New York Gas and Electric Light Heat and Power. The Met ropolitan Traction group holds major stake and aims to consolidate electric lighting, heating and motive power in the city. Lincoln January 4 The Nebraska legislature opened its twenty sixth session with the houses convening in the capitol. The Senate organized quickly led by A F Talbot Republican as president pro tempore while the House chose Pan F Clark Republican as speaker after a split within the caucus. Five rebel House Republicans reconciled to secure the speakership and new state officers are to be inaugurated Thursday. A J R Talbot of Lincoln emerged as a candidate in the senate rival faction.

New York reports a Wall Street tale of the Rockefellers and the Alton purchase. The Missouri, Kansas & Texas seeks Chicago access via St Louis lines and new North Shore routes. Vanderbilt and Gould interests join, with Adams, Harriman and Union Pacific links noted.
January 4 report: Secretary Long ordered the Oregon to Honolulu via Callao to carry distilling ship Tris. The town is to San Francisco for boiler repairs and a broken cylinder head replacement, with the steamer Celtic and colliers Seaside and Justin to accompany. Oregon to receive Manila orders at Fondlais if no change occurs. The Castine also ordered.

Reports to the territorial board of health list seventeen well developed smallpox cases in Lincoln County. The outbreak centers in Stroud and Chandler with additional cases in the country. Three deaths reported in Stroud and Snohomish area, with two more at Box hom e in now Believed to be tiny.
In Washington on January 4 Representative Dingley was not quite so well. The muggy weather and heavy atmosphere affected him, causing renewed fears that physicians’ best efforts might fail. He had a restless night and a high fever, leaving him a touch weaker this morning.
Mansfield Missouri January 4 report details the ninth Kansas City Fort Scott Memphis railroad robbery. Five to six masked men halted a westbound train at Macomb after an onboard boarding at Norwood. They forced crew, dynamited a through safe, looted the car and escaped into brush, with Special Agent Chester pursuing. No passengers harmed.
Washington on Jan 4 announced by high authority that Joseph H Choate of New York would be nominated ambassador to Great Britain. The nomination will be sent to the Senate in a few days, though delay does not suggest any change in plans. Hamilton Wicks dies in Brooklyn aged 61. he organized the Denver and Kansas City expositions in the 1880s and helped found The Chicago Herald.
A Missouri Pacific passenger train derailed near Jefferson City at 2:30 a.m. Engineeer Charles Clawson and Fireman Zot were killed after leaping from the locomotive as it struck a boulder. The wreck sent cars toward the Missouri River. only the rear Pullman avoided the crash. Ninety passengers were aboard but no other deaths occurred. Traffic will be restored after several hours.

Fairbury Nebraska January 4 eleven persons are reported poisoned after eating spoiled pork. Martin Keller a farmer butchered two hogs and members of his family and three others who ate the meat are seriously ill with trichinosis, several critically ill.
