A massive blaze devastated Paterson New Jersey destroying 61 buildings and leaving about 1 000 families homeless. The fire swept a 25 block area from Main Street to Paterson Street. hundreds of structures including banks newspapers theaters and public buildings were ruined. Firefighters from nearby towns aided as insurance estimates and losses remained uncertain.
The United States circuit court of appeals ruled that the court martial of Peter C. Deming and nine other volunteers violated article 77 of the articles of war, decoupling the volunteer army from the regular army. The decision frees nearly 200 men held in federal penitentiaries and potentially releases all volunteers sentenced by regular court martial.

Willard Grain officials reported flames shooting from the center front as residents doused contents with water. The blaze began in the elevator area and extended into Owens Machine Tool territory.
