Reports from Topeka and Chicago tally record lows as a deep cold wave sweeps across Colorado to the Dakotas and Texas. Officials warn the cold will linger weeks, with supplies strained, cattle losses feared, and coal shortages emerging in Kentucky and Ohio while Georgia sees near freezing.
Minnesota reports 33 and 34 below zero as frigid air grips the region. Duluth and Hartford plunge to 4 and 12 below with strong winds. New York and Atlantic coast regions endure heavy snow, high tides, widespread flooding, and disrupted rail and shipping. The cold frontier extends into Kansas and Florida with record lows, while Cape Cod and Long Island face severe storms.
A special Weather Bureau bulletin reports freezing temperatures in Florida as far south as Tampa to Jupiter. Tampa 30 degrees Jupiter 36 Jacksonville 28. Forecasts show a drop to about 25 in Jacksonville and a prolonged cold period east of the Rockies. Separate notes describe suffering in St Louis, a gas shutoff in Chillicothe, and Detroit recording 18 below zero.
Police Matron Thorpe reports many suffering poor families lacking coal and bedding, with twenty five named in need of aid. Parkdale reports measles and whooping cough among children and several infant deaths. The Roseberry family at 1217 Lime Street lives in a damp cellar with no coal or proper bedding and only corn meal and water for food.
Snow storms in Colorado cripple western rail lines with Midland trains stalled between Leadville and Buena Vista and two held at Glenwood Springs. Rio Grande predicts reopening after the storm ends. Union Pacific trains run late but through the schedule. Chicago endures the coldest weather since 1872 with temperatures dropping to 30 below.
A severe northeast snowstorm from Poston to Nantasket wrecked a three masted schooner off Nantasket beach and endangered its crew. Boston harbor endured driven snow and high surf while ferry slips flooded and coastal properties suffered. Swampscott and Lynn shoreline tides swept away structures and yachts.
Dewey reports armed insurgents ordered from San Roque after interfering with workers. Village burned before dawn. troops now in control. Otis denies Aguinaldo sending reps to Manila. casualty lists and updates from Gen Otis released.
