Sequel of Church Debt Leaves Saint Luke’s Christchurch Church
The Minneapolis church at Thirty-second Street and Pleasant Avenue once known as St Luke’s Episcopal then Christchurch now exists in name only. Erected in 1887 with a 125 member congregation, it carried a $74,000 mortgage to a local businessman, later in arrears, leading to foreclosure. Creditors and congregation split, many joined other churches, and the property was bid in by the mortgage holder. Some members kept using the building for services under rent, but further trouble arose and the creditor and congregation parted. A recent visit found the church stripped of furniture and furnishings, with plans for criminal action abandoned.

Counting the Cost of Kansas War Claims
Kansas state officials report the first war claim to the national government without a state agent. Auditor George J. Cole, in liaison via Senator Baker, forwards the tally of expenses for Kansas volunteers in the war with Incomt. The plan preserves state funds by bypassing the agent’s roughly $4,000 fee while noting administrative sentiment against state agents in such tasks.
