A family tale follows Dorothy and Mr. Jorden as they travel from New York to Kentucky for a Christmas with relatives. The journey includes trains, tobacco fields, and rural scenes, with Dorothy’s curiosity and optimistic outlook guiding the trip toward a hopeful holiday.
In a winter village scene children discover clusters of ornaments on thorn trees while preparing for a grand festival Dorothy enjoys the festival preparations and Aunt Tully’s kitchen becomes a hub of corn popping and pine gathering. Santa rumors and gifts bring bustle as Alec ships packages from the depot. An unusual visitor questions hunger and science, trading bread for a strange riddle about stomachs and weather.
An old narrative recalls a holiday scene with Christmas lights and fireworks. Children gather as Mr Gray and Mr Jorden host candles, sky rockets, and pinwheels from New York. The town’s festive mood includes gifts for darkles, a discussion about Christmas pies, and a humorous domestic scene with Mr Towser and Mrs Bowser. A stray tramp, a cat, and a freezing water experiment mix into a broader vignette of seasonal bustle and community quirks.
After dinner Mrs Bowser suggests visiting a neighbor for a late experiment. Bowser resists but concedes to test freezing water on the back fence to settle claims that frozen water cleanses impurities. He defends the plan as a life or death matter and prepares to begin in the kitchen.
