General Calix to Garcia, a famed Cuban guerrilla leader and Mambist elected to Cuba’s assembly, died in Washington from pneumonia after a brief illness at Hotel Raleigh. The veteran fought for Cuban independence for 30 years and endured hardship abroad before succumbing to illness.
Washington December 32 The funeral of General Garcia the Cuban commander will be held at 10 o clock tomorrow morning at St Patrick s church in the city. The other details of the funeral and honorary pallbearers have not yet been announced. The body will be placed in a metallic casket and deposited in a vault at Islington pending its removal to Cuba. The date of the funeral has not yet been fixed but the government will place a war ship at the disposal of the Cubans for the purpose. This arrangement is said to be in accordance with the wishes of General Garcia and his comrades in arms.
New York reports nine shipwrecked seamen and captain Cornint from the Americat bark Gleneida arriving as passengers on the steamer Orinoco. The Gleneida left New York November 25 for Buenos Ayres with cargo. two days out a territe hurricane from the southeast struck, tearing crew from the deck and washing away fore equipment as the ship battled heavy seas.
