Ancient rudder relic linked to Lewis & Clark expedition found
Workmen digging near the Kansas river foot of Kansas Avenue uncovered a 42 foot long wooden rudder from a boat, with the inscription 1704. Historians believe it may trace to early explorations through the Canzas territory and possibly the Lewis and Clark expedition, dating to 1804. The piece rested buried under sand and marsh, remarkably preserved, about 100 feet east of the old bridge. Local officials will refer it to the State Historical Society for further study.
