Grand revival in Kansas business and farming interests begins with renewed immigration themes. Early steps outline large advertisements in eastern papers. Advertising touted as pay, with live men to prove it. Two thousand dollars per page in major dailies.
A temporary Topeka organization formed to advertise Kansas to the nation proposes hiring writers and arranging write ups in major papers. Oscar Bischoff elected president and Thomas G Shillinglaw temporary secretary, with a plan to secure Sunday features in the New York World and other outlets. Committees to draft circulars and raise funds are appointed as leaders push a statewide drive.
At a Topeka meeting Simon Greanspan donated 100 to the movement and banks and railroads pledge liberal ad funding. A circular seeks under 10 from each of two banks, potentially surpassing 7000 from banks, with loan companies contributing in hundreds. A Topeka Copeland meeting next Monday will form a permanent organization while inviting other Kansas towns to join the effort to promote the commonwealth.
About 3000 delegates and visitors attend the seventh institute of the Christian union in Coremares. Largest delegations arrive from Allegheny, Pittsburgh, and Chicago. Governor McKinley delivers welcome address, Rev. D F McGill responds for delegates. C P Campbell of Chicago presides. The institute continues through the week with a 200 voice choir aiding the exercises.
Expenditures exceed receipts by $7,702,299 for the first two-thirds of the month, with $1,260,000 still due on pensions. Officials estimate the deficit will shrink to about $5,000,000 in ten days. Last month’s excess over receipts was $5,478,366.

Dubuque Iowa August 22 The early settlers association of Dubuque has set upon a plan to amend a marker to be placed over the grave of Julien De Duque whose remains rest on a rocky point just below the city. The design is after a ruined shine castle and dedication ceremonies are expected July 4 1896. A park of thirty six acres will be donated by the city and county surrounding the monument.

A devastating city fire began at one o'clock in Milwaukee, fanned by strong winds. The blaze swept from Water Street to Grand Avenue, threatening the St Paul depot and lower Fourth Ward as warehouses and freight cars burned. Steamers were moved from docks, and losses mounted with hundreds of cars and several businesses destroyed.
In the House of Commons the first lord of the treasury A. J. Balfour stated he favors an international agreement but cannot pledge his colleagues. He doubted that an international conference would yield an agreement.
Acting Secretary Adee says information from Ambassador Eustis indicates the court martial records and evidence for Mr. Waller will reach Paris by month end. Eustis also reports access to Mr. Waller has been granted, with telegraphic instruction to meet immediately if not already done.
NOT FROM WICHITA Hurcutnsos Kansas Aug 22 The A J Lusk arrested in Oregon as from Wichita is probably ex president of the Hutchison Nations bank filed two years ago He was indicted by the United States grand jury for making false entries in the bank books The cashier and vice president were acquitted Lusk failed to appear being in Mexico at the time His bond was forfeited It is not known that any other charges are against him and it is supposed his non appearance at United States court is the reason for his rearrest.
Dr A S Embree pastor of the First M E church arrived in Topeka today from a seven weeks trip abroad via New York and Lafayette Ind He reported seasickness lasting after arrival and recalled stormy seas and iceberg danger off Newfoundland He described Ireland Scotland and Germany visits and noted a welcoming bouquet from the Epworth League at his home in Topeka Kansas.
London reports about 200000 American travelers in Europe seeking return voyages home. In May to August about 45000 Americans were landed from seven large steamship lines, with 28000 more from smaller lines. Only 16000 may find September berths, leaving 20000 eager to sail in September amid crowded offices and delays.
The third annual flower carnival in Colorado Springs drew crowds from Denver Pueblo Colorado City Manitou and Cripple Creek. Excursion trains arrived early as strangers poured in.
