He warned against revolutionary justice from federal power, criticized Governor Altgeld for suppressing disorder, and argued sympathetic strikes cannot be arbitrated. He reviewed the Pullman boycott and urged strict adherence to constitutional limits while noting the new membership and financial health of the association.
New York August reports that Congress lacks a quorum and cannot fund internal revenue collection. Treasury officials say $500,000 is needed for current year income tax provisions, with 25 deputies and 20 state clerks required. House and Senate committees have not acted, leaving collectors helpless until funding arrives. Aug 22 note from New Oxreads reports Professor George Byer curator at Tulase university museum allowing a rattlesnake bite to test venom inoculation. A young snake bit his finger, swelling rapidly but he hopes repeated bites will show gradual venom absorption could inoculate the system against future bites. He believes a young snake causes less venom and aims to prove the bite can be non fatal if exposure is gradual.
Aug 22 Brigham Young of Salt Lake City a Mormon apostle descended from the Mor mon spostia is jailed in Jersey City for pursuing local girls. Police arrest him after he drinks and claims to seek a wife. He says he was expelled from Mormon society for preferring rum to religion and claims to be 75 years old with a tall build and a full white beard. He will be arraigned today.
Aug 22 The Illinois and Mississippi canal the Hennepin canal has gained prominence with the east end work beginning. Over 2,000 men will soon be employed clearing the right of way as 12 miles are paid for. The project aims to connect the northwestern states with Chicago grain markets via a new waterway.
Charters have been issued by the secretary of state for Highland Lodge No 299,4. F. & A. M. of Clay County, with incorporators including James W. Smith and others. The Lincoln State Bank of Lincoln is authorized with capital stock at $200,000 and incorporators listed from multiple states.

At Maltwile hall in St Louis on August 22 a Conference of Organised Labor merged into the People's party. Delegates from Trades and Labor unions and the Trades council backed party resolutions urging ward political clubs and a conference committee with the party. Organised labor, estimated at 25 000 to 60 000 members, united to support the People's party platform and reform planks.
Wirt of Coon Bluffs and companion Roseberry were mistaken for Sheriff Bowers and a deputy while traveling near Cripple Creek. Wirt sustained gunshot wounds to both arms and may lose his left arm. James Drury was arrested on charges tied to the attack. Mollie Maguire links reported in the turmoil surrounding labor disputes in the Cripple Creek district.
The light house tender John, with President Cleveland aboard, passed City Island at 10 40 p m while no repairs were made for his transport to Washington. Cleveland leaves Jersey City at 8 22 p m on the congressional limited. Charles Payton, a switchman, was fatally injured in Chesapeake and Ohio yards when a belt head pierced his head as he bent to couple. Fred Taral to ride Agitator in Futurity at Jamaica on Saturday. Agitator has not been favored by bettors. Congressman Holman renominated at first ballot in Brenervista, Indiana, completing 30 years in Congress at term end.
Dallas August 22 Ninth district Democratic congressional convention met in Corsicana and adjourned sessions. Ballots show Burke 37 votes Puludexter 32 Abbott 1% Hardy 10. In Mixicoa Texas the convention began two thousand five hundred eighty ballots with Mc Crud 24 1-3 Yokum 19 Kilgore 102 as it seeks a final result this week.
The Republican convention resumed after a pause to consider credentials. The majority report was adopted, naming Evans as governor candidate. Committee reports named W Hawkins as permanent chairman and S H Gault as secretary, with FP Cleton as permanent chairman of credentials.
