Rennes Aug 21 The third week of the second Dreyfus court martial opened with witnesses including Generals Roget De Boisdettre and Billat as Col Piequart and M. Gribelin testified. Counsel for the defense pressed cross examination while the court debated partiality as audiences booed and a key witness, Cochefort, recalled the arrest scene and the dictation test. The session highlighted competing accounts of handwriting analysis, borderaux, and the involvement of the general staff in the affair.
General Charles W. Blair, a famed Kansan, died at Corona Beach near San Diego at age seventy after a yearlong illness. He spent forty years in Kansas, led early Kansas troops, commanded the Stairs battery, and held lieutenant colonel and colonel ranks in the Second Kansas infantry and Fourteenth Kansas cavalry. His military career featured action at Wilson’s Creek and the Price campaign, shaping Kansas military history.
Charles W Blair, born in Grangetown Ohio, rose from county prosecutor to Kansas political pillar. He lived in Fort Scott and Leavenworth, allied with General Lopez Cuba campaign, served as Kansas City Fort Scott railroad attorney, and was a long time Democratic committeeman. He died leaving four married daughters and a widow.
A boiler explosion at Nesch Vitrified brick works in Pittsburg Kansas killed three men James Holman John Henry Hearth and David Boyd and injured several others. The dead were buried under debris and Boyd died after being pulled alive and brought to the hospital. Wounded include Charles Cook Grast Heath Henry Neath John Nesch Young Cole and Tackler. Portions of the boiler were hurled about a quarter mile damaging nearby rooms and structures.
Coffeyville reports a drowning incident on the Verdigris River near Olaxah forty miles south of town. Two women, Miss Sarah Cispham and Mrs. Calkins, ventured beyond their depth while wading. their bodies were recovered in shallow water. The deceased were linked to a pending marriage between Miss Cispham and James Guthrie. her fiancé and Mr. Calkins’ husband assisted in the search upstream.
Report describes a purported government run Klondike on an island in the Kaw River near St Marys offering drinks via a ferry landing. Authorities are cited as allowing the venture under navigable river laws, with clashes with local county attorneys over saloon closures and dry periods.

Governor Stanley forwarded Major AM Harvey of Topeka for an officer role in new volunteer regiments. The list included six white Kansas officers already commissioned, with two Twenty-third Kansas colored officers named but not matched to new regiments. The communication cites Harvey and Lt W W McCarty as replacements for colored officers, reflecting partisan neutrality in the push.
A Leghorn dispatch reports five men arrested in Italy on charges of attacking and wounding U S sailors from the cruiser Olympia who had come ashore. The incident occurred amid tensions after the Olympia’s visit.
