Thomas Lipton led an excursion of steamers and yachts from the harbor to the bay as Shamrock and Reliance met in a keen race. The two champions fought a balmy but variable wind battle, with Shamrock briefly leading before Reliance closed the gap. The fleet enjoyed rough seas and shifting wind, ultimately leaving the outcome in suspense near Asbury Park.
Reports from Constantinople Brussels and London indicate Russia will govern Dardanelles and Bosphorus, Austria will handle land, and Italy will supervise Albanian affairs. The plan envisions Turkish sovereignty restored after reforms and revolts quelled, with withdrawal of forces once settled.
London and Chicago social rounds report the marriage of Honore Palmer of Chicago to Miles Grace Greenwich Brown of Baltimore at St George's Church Han over Sarare. The Sul t get De Degen appeared before Major Bullard with a three man retinue and offered a full apology for insulting the United States flag. Major Bull ford demanded reparation and said the outrage was caused by the Sultan of Wasit and the son of the ruler. Substantial indemnity was discussed as compensation to the United States.
United States authorities arrest Mrs. A. Cook of East Fourth Street on charge of fraud in a case brought by J. W. Marrs of Belvidere Ottawa County. Marrs alleges she induced him to forward $18 then four more, after promising a private matrimonial agency would yield returns. She is bound over for trial in U S District Court.
Vice Chancellor Heed in Camden ordered a show cause hearing for appointing a receiver of the Imperial Restaurant on Atlantic Avenue Atlantic City. Lee Ming and Lee Pong formed a partnership with Lee Toy claiming $600 cash and two partners $200 each in 1902 profits averaging $400 weekly. Toy alleges denial of access to books and building since October 1902 and continued operation despite requests to close.
In Wilmington Del a U S court filing by George Wharton Pepper Philadelphia receiver of Bay State Gas charges an unlawful stock scheme. The bill seeks to recover 100000 Bay State Gas shares allegedly issued without consideration to Senator J Forward Addicks and others amid a broader fraud claim regarding a $75000000 stock transaction.
In New Brunswick New Jersey Mrs Josephine Hil on a bicycle with a basket of exes stopped a runaway horse by jumping off and grabbing the bridle. The horse owner Augustine Campbell praised her prompt action and safety.
Visiting G A R veterans opened their executive session with greetings for Sarah Brown, daughter of John Brown. Delegates focus on election of officers led by commander in chief. California and Nevada endorse C Mason Kinne for vice commander. Other noms include Harmon Jove Bradford Day and James H Bradford for chaplain, Marman for surgeon general. One veteran dies, health reported good with sixty five under care.
San Francisco August 20 veterans of the Spanish American War and the Philippine insurrection held a reunion and camp fire at Ellin street armory. Officers elected include Commander in Chief General Gwett Summara of Oregon and other senior officials. Adams to appoint ad hoc officers later. Delegates favor consolidation of all veteran organizations and Rev. G G Woolley named as a delegate to eastern meetings to press unity.
Russell remittance yesterday followed by W F Stubbs from Douglass county sending per diem and mileage for the late special session. Stubbs’s check totaled 17.20 dollars.
