Lord Chief Justice of England addressed the American Bar Association at Saratoga on August 20. He praised select American institutions while criticizing the Supreme Court’s power to nullify acts of Congress, noting such power is unknown in England. The gathering drew over 40 attendees in Convention Hall.
The speech by Lord Haewell before American leaders outlines England's view of international law, the United States role, and the potential of arbitration. It contrasts English constitutional flexibility with the written U S constitution, argues for cautious use of arbitration, and cautions against ignoring moral issues in global conflict.
The Evening Post and Mall and Express applaud Mr Bryan for his frank denial of campaign financing claims. They cite his statement he has never been employed by mine owners and that speeches in Cheutauquas and other bureaus were paid by involved parties. They call for official confirmation only if a mine owner tie is proven.

Senator J E Jones of Arkansas arrived in Chicago to open the Democratic national committee headquarters at the Sherman House. He traveled with his son Kimborough Jones and others, securing parlor floor rooms on Randolph street for the operation and beginning distribution of campaign literature immediately.
The state central Committee of the Democratic, Populist and Free Silver Republican parties has rented two rooms on Kansas avenue in the Branner building for headquarters. Each faction will have a separate room and plan to start work immediately, with speakers from all three factions at important meetings. The committees aim to launch their campaign in September.
A New York conference led by J Edward Simmon a and Frederick I Tappan concluded that the financial situation does not justify concerted action to import 25 million dollars in gold at present.
Delegates to the gold standard Democratic convention began arriving in Louisville as Col W C P Breckinridge and ex Governor Buckner attended. The state executive committee met at the Galt House with George M Davie presiding to discuss the platform. Breckinridge was consulted on platform matters and Lt Governor Hingman of Adie county was named temporary chairman. George M Davie is set as campaign chair with A J Carrol secretary and Thos W Hullit elected from the district.
Aug. 10 San Francisco bankers deny knowledge of gold imports to the city. Lazard Freres not in banking here. Representatives of Bank of California First National and London Paris and Americans say no plans for importing gold. Cashier Brown suggests large gold bring might be for speculation ahead of silver premium.
In Herkimer Aug 20 two Republican candidates for Congress emerged for the 26th district. The convention sided with Peacock faction against Sherman supporters and nominated S. G. Peacock for representative. Sherman will be renominated later. contest over the renomination may go to the courts. Also notices travel ads tout vestibuled trains via the Burlington Route to Chicago and St Louis with comfortable cars and dining service.
Caldwell and Overmyer announce a full day joint debate at Grantville on Saturday August 2 with expected large attendance. Secretary Carlisle departs Marion for Washington aboard the government steamer Mistletoe accompanied by his family.
The Democratic convention in Buffalo is expected to endorse William Jennings Bryan after days of campaigning in New York. Danforth of the New York organization and Hinckley’s son bring invitations to meetings in the Catskills. Bryan will travel to Albany, Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Hornellsville, Jamestown, Chautauqua, Cleveland, Columbus, Toledo, South Bend, and Chicago before returning west, with brief speeches and minimal stops.
A lively evening program features Mrs. G Parkhurst soprano Mrs FL Poster violinist Mr Waldemar von Dahlen tenor and others. Selections include Schumann Schubert Brahms Chopin and Gounod with violin obligato by Mrs Foster and accompaniment by Edith Isbell. Proceeds go to the floral display fund.
The Silver forces announce the organization of their central club at Hamilton Hall next Thursday evening, shifting from Wednesday due to a prior hall engagement. Pratt Falls, Pratt, Kan. Aug. 20 The large hardware and implement firm Hopper & Elliott has made an assignment, unable to collect and carry on business, causing a countywide stir.
Don M. Dickinson H. T. Thurber and Elliott G. Stevenson announce the dissolution of their Detroit law partnership effective September 1 The move lands amid political tension as Dickinson opposed Stevenson who had become chairman of Michigan's Democratic state central committee and supported Bryan Stevenson subsequently resigned the chairmanship but the friction persisted leading to the firm’s breakup.
Bradford Bratton Aug 20 reports Walker Adams a store owner and his son William Adams fought four burglars after a midnight alarm. Adams the elder was shot in the head and died. William returned fire, wounding two burglars who were carried away. both attackers later died from abdomen wounds. identities unrevealed.
Weather forecasts show warmer conditions returning with generally fair skies tonight and tomorrow. Mr Jennings predicts no more sweltering heat, though statewide reports note temperatures from 80 to 95 and scattered rain.
In Pueblo Colorado on August 20 the Democratic convention adopted a fusion resolution for a full state ticket and electors representing all parties with a fusion committee empowered to replace candidates. Thomas, who declined governor, urged fusion. Senator Teller’s switch from the GOP was hailed as moral courage.
In New Haven on August 20 silver standard Democrats gathered about 100 members from across the state to form an organization supporting Bryan and Sewall. Committees yet unsent, a recess followed, with Judge A W Dennison the first to submit a nomination certificate and B F Milon the next. both certificates barred from filing until after September 4.
Atlanta Ga Aug 20 The Fourth district Democratic convention at Warm Springs ended its deadlock with the nomination of W C Adamson of Carroll on the 28th ballot Adamson is a free silver Democrat.
A Curtis Nebraska editor Razee of the Curtis Courier was shot and injured last night by a farmer named Gar 8 after a dispute over two trivial matters. The incident occurred near Omaha and is reported by Curtie Neb. authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
A massive cloudburst near Mogollon New Mexico caused eight foot floodwaters for over half an hour washing away 40 houses and damaging the Colonial Mining and Deep Down Mining properties. Three men drowned, many miners missing, and telecommunication lines down hampering full casualty reports. Mines and mill buildings suffered extensive wreckage with inventories and ore processing gear carried away by floodwaters.

Olathe, Aug. 20. Wi Ong county attorney led an assault at the post office yesterday. Dr. John Parker, a dentist and nephew of ex governor St John, was cut by a knife, receiving cuts to the coat, vest, and clothing but sustaining no serious injuries. The clash arose from a dispute between Ferber and Gee, the mother of the defendant.
Cora May Johnston petitions the district court for divorce from her husband Willie C Sofrurtar claiming they married in Nigeron Le 2991 and moved to Pennsylvania. She alleges he failed to support her while a child was sent to visit relatives and she mentions a Steam Laundry location at 113 and Lid Weet.
