Ten thousand people surged into Union Square overturning carriages and blocking street cars as crowds pressed to hear William Jennings Bryan. At almost midnight Bryan appeared on a hotel balcony and branded the gold advocates as an army of generals.
An Aug 13 crowd in Union Square near the Bartholdi Hotel surged after a civic meeting adjourned. Supporters mobbed streets, overturning vehicles as rumors spread Bryan would address from the hotel balcony. He urged voters to back honest candor and exercise ballot rights to defend democracy, amid Democratic party tensions.
The Westminster Gazette reports on Mr Bryan's Madison Square Garden address. It warns the speech may erode investor confidence and prompt money withdrawal from the United States, suggesting gold would rise if the silver party gains power and criticizing political dishonesty in the Democratic convention.
The piece warns that large gold debts plus a gold premium could make interest unpayable, forcing debt payments in currency or bankruptcy. It notes difficulty selling American railway bonds except the safest, hoping eastern electors back gold standard pledges to avoid a crisis of unprecedented uncertainty.
New York July 31 Mr Bryan awoke early and read reviews of his speech. He said the papers harbored prejudice yet did not worry him and that he did not expect to conquer all opposition at once. He noted the day called for a principled discussion rather than fierce oratory.
At Windsor Hotel New York on August 18 a large crowd gathered along Fifth Avenue and at the Forty-seventh street entrance as Mr and Mrs Bryan and Mr Sewall arrived. Despite orders, Bryan shook hands with many supporters, meeting about 3000 hands in an hour. The party moved inside to receive visitors in the parlors, with Mr Bryan accompanied by Mr Sewall.
Four popular Topela young ladies are named as initial candidates for the Floral Festival Queen with dozens more to be added. Voting at 632 Kansas Avenue opened yesterday in an alcove near Geo. Stansfeld’s store as committees seek support and funds. The winner will sit on a throne in a white and gold barge, with a royal procession featuring guards, trumpeters, and a large court, as hosts organize favors for supporters and parents’ consent is sought.
Pittsburg reports a cloudburst and canyoning flood sweeping Dehaven and Sharpsburg. Six to thirty lives feared lost as Pine Creek overran banks, washing away bridges, oil tanks, and houses. Appleton family perished. several residents evacuated to higher ground as waters rise rapidly.
A rapid three hour storm submerged stations and mills, drowning two foundry workers and prompting suspensions at Walter Walker Co. Mrs Thompson of Starpeburg was recovered from the river. The rain, up to 2.24 inches, caused river rises, mud and debris, blocked car lines, and widespread flooding across Pittsburgh and Allegany with fog and smoke lingering in the early morning.
The body of WHE Hisumel, 13, son of Geo H Hammel, was found this morning in the Kansas river near Calhoun Blut about three miles north of North Topeka. A party by boat recovered the body from an eddy after drowning Tuesday evening at the mouth of Soldier Creek. An undertaker was dispatched to take charge.
W E Brubaker, a prominent old soldier in the city, collapsed from heat while assisting in hanging a red curtain at Hamston Hall for a convention. He was unconscious for hours, endured several convulsions, and is in a critical condition under Dr J P Lewis care.
In Pittsburg on August 13 a plain gold engagement ring with a ruby setting inscribed From W Him Mamie June 4 1880 was recovered by a vehicle cleaner at the Pittsburg Transfer Company stables. The ring was bent and damaged and the police will forward it to Mrs Bryan in New Orleans.
The Fifth Ward Bryan free silver club is summoned to Zane's Hall at Euclid and Clay streets Friday night. Joseph Waters Charlie Heilinny E Cheney and Eugene Wolfe will address the meeting. All free silver supporters invited. President Samuel Jones Secretary H C Fraser. House Burns at Chandler and Fourth Streets early morning. Fire destroyed the Wade residence due to distant hydrant. cause unknown.
Mrs Join Sutherin wife of the coal dealer died this morning at 1 oclock from injuries she received when gored by a cow about a year ago Funeral services will be at the residence three miles west of the city on Sixth avenue tomorrow at 1 oclock in the afternoon.
The Manhansett hotel at Sheltersland on the Long Island coast burned heavily on the south side. One of the largest and most fashionable summer hotels was damaged, with residents and guests alarmed as flames swept the building. Firefighting efforts continued to prevent further spread.
An inmate known as Fry, who had days remaining in county jail for a harness theft, made a bold post dinner escape attempt but was captured just outside the jail yard by guards.
The Kansas Republican State Central Committee elected J. M. Simpson as chairman after a tense session. Cy Leland helped, with Bristow as secretary amid controversy over fit and allegiance. Disputes centered on who could efficiently run the campaign and preserve party unity.
Word has it in this city that Mrs Jonathan Thomas, once reported seriously ill with mountain fever in Las Verna New Mexico, has greatly improved and expects to return home to Topeka soon. The mountain fever diagnosis is thought to be incorrect. Mr Thomas accompanies her. Ingalls Neb. Aug 13 The Nebraska and Kansas G A R reunion failed to secure Senator Teese.
A noon wind shift from south to northeast caused a eight degree temperature drop from 95 to 85, then 86 by 2 PM. Mr Jennings attributes the change to a low pressure moving south and a high north, with northwest return anticipated. Forecast calls for generally fair, warm weather tonight and tomorrow. Temperatures range 4 to 99 across the state.
Christiana Aug 13 The Arctic explorer Dr Nansen has reached Vardo Island Norway aboard the steamer Wildwerd which had lately sailed to Franz Josef land to retrieve the Jackson Farensworth expedition observers report the arrival and ongoing return mission in a developing Polar tale.
E. B. Harvey of 58 West Street died this afternoon at 1 o clock after a two week bout with malaria fever. His wife, visiting relatives in Michigan, was summoned and arrived shortly before his death. Surviving sons include David, and Harvey was a respected employee of the Parkhurst-Davis company.
Miss Laura Evans a National Hotel employee reports her gold watch and chain were snatched from her belt while she and three companions watched a parade at the Seventh and Kansas avenues corner. Police notified and hunt for the thief begun.
This morning carpenters started framing the temporary bridge structure and crews began clearing the riverbank. Piles and a temporary shoring system will support the old bridge while the new span is built, with expected progress and moving of the old bridge planned within weeks.
A 12 year old boy, a wrapper at Bundis Mills Adams dry goods store, was struck by a freight train while crossing Fifteenth Street near the railroad. His foot caught in a coupler. he was badly mashed but no fatality. He was removed to his home and received medical aid.
A Kansas native James G Price of Cleveland Oklahoma, a noted attorney, is missing since July 1 after a divorce suit. In other items Lil Frost stabbed City Stowell near Kansas Avenue. both men were treated and released. Patrols quelled a disturbance on Adams Street. two intoxicated individuals were fined. J A Fuller, arrested for selling intoxicating liquor, was found guilty. EL Mengold was detained on arson-related inquiries from Oklahoma.
Dustay Hahn of Strong City sustained a neck fracture after a lockmotive accident. He was brought to the city this morning by ambulance. Fireworks display planned by the Marshall band after a Friday Garfield Park contact, with a fireworks show announced for Garfield Park.
