Gold standard in India discussed by Mint Director Roberts
Washington Aug 10 Director of the Mint Roberts comments on the Indian currency committee report favoring gold standard. He notes the 1880s policy remains, mints closed to silver, and finds the committee unanimously against reopening to silver. They warn it would not bind India to gold in exchange for rupees and favor open mints with gold coinage while keeping the rupee value fixed. Roberts says India cannot attract large gold inflows and compares to the United States, stating the gold standard aligns producer wealth in both nations and ends currency depreciation.
