An April 29 Evening Post dispatch from Key West reports Cuban port Cardenas bombarded by the monitor Terror and gunboat Machias. Spanish batteries fired two hours but were silenced. ships endured shore fire with limited damage. Reports also note a bombardment at Cantónas east of Matanzas as the action continued.
In Topeka the governor recommends Maj. J. K. Hudson for brigadier general prompting heated opposition from Col. J. W. P. Hughes supporters. Hughes boasted Republican influence and war record criticism, while Hudson backers cite his war stance and lack of court martial baggage.
The president named Kansas postmasters Henry Leib Oberlin E MecCteltang Chanute and Ewing Herbert Hiawatha. Albert Roby son of Dr W Roby, in U S Ninth infantry hospital service, passed Topeka at 4 am amid a welcoming crowd. Kansas dairymen organized last night at Throop hotel to provide mutual fire insurance. Co F Armstrong president W F Jensen secretary C H Pattison treasurer of the Kansas olive association to be incorporated at the next State Dairy association meeting. A reserve fund to cover losses by fire and wind will be kept by the Protective association. A H Greet and John E Brost outlined a Kansas dairy exhibit of 200 square feet for the Omaha exposition.
Dispatches from Afanila report the U S fleet is due at Manila Sunday. The Spanish fleet is split into two squadrons with Castilla and other ships near Manila. Admiral Montejo’s ships patrol the western coasts awaiting the Americans. A large auxiliary cruiser named Montevideo is said to be reinforced but registers question its identity.
In Chattanooga on April 29 orders sent entire artillery batteries, the Twenty-fourth Infantry, and four Ninth Cavalry companies to move to Dam-Pa Florida. Trains receive priority, aiming for 25 miles plus per hour. Expect remaining Chickamauga forces, including Tenth Cavalry, Twenty-fifth Infantry, to depart by Sunday night. Sixteenth Infantry units from Washington and Idaho were assembled after a night in the Chattanooga yard, disappointing troops awaiting Tampa orders. This will join the First brigade.
The first company of Kansas volunteers will reach Topeka tomorrow at 12:20 PM from Kansas City Kansas on the Union Pacific. Topeka residents are urged to welcome them with music patriotic demonstrations and flag displays along Kansas avenue. The Commercial club should aid in the welcome and cannon salutes as Topeka is the mobilizing point for 3,000 Kansas soldiers. Turn out tomorrow.

Mount Gretna Pa April 2 The Pennsylvania militia assembled in harsh weather with snow hail and rain as the division tested endurance. Soldiers slept under wet canvas in ankle deep mud while arriving from early morning into night. Wagons sank in mud and the camp tableau showed steady arrivals totaling over in tents and camp gear.
A dispatch from St Vincent reports Spanish ships including the Maris Teresa Almirante Oquendo Viscaya and Cristobal Colon with torpedo boat destroyers Pluton Terror and Furore sailing west at 9 am, likely toward Cuba, while torpedo boats Azore Rayo Ariete and transports San Francisco and Ciudad de Cadiz head north toward the Canary islands.

London April 22 The Hong Stange correspondent reports there is no Manila news on the Americas scene. Public sentiment shifts against neutrality as the Philippines governor acts, drawing sympathy toward the United States. Dispatches note refugees arriving aboard Saigon and Espana from Manila.
