Judge N C McFarland of Topeka died in his Copeland room after a three week illness due to stomach trouble and dyspepsia. W J Maitland died Saturday night at his residence 119 Polk street from heart neuralgia with sudden death. Funeral services were held at Pirat Congregational church. He had been struck by lightning two years earlier and fell at Santa Fe freight house last year. A New England native, he belonged to the Congregational church and left a wife and daughter.
Theodore Havemeyer died at his New York residence at 3 this morning after a Southern tour. He contracted grip on returning from Saint Augustine and Old Point Comfort, leading to a rapid decline. Havemeyer, born in 1839, was vice president of the American Sugar Refining Co and long associated with the sugar trust. He lived in a Madison Avenue palace and served as Vienna’s consul general for 25 years. His brother Henry R. Havemeyer heads the company.
