Bath Maine April 23 The firm Arthur Sewall Co owners of the schooner Shenandoah deny reports of her capture by Spain claiming she is not taken and expect later news of her safe arrival at Liverpool She sails from San Francisco to Liverpool with wind and general cargo and is now due in Liverpool.
Berlin reports a note exchange among major powers warning neutral flags protection and promising reparation if violated. France, Austria, Italy and Germany may send envoys to observe war operations while Britain and Russia hesitate. The German government opposes sale of Hamburg American liners Normannia and Columbia to a Spanish firm without its consent.
Washington reports the navy department knows the Oregon and the Marietta whereabouts but will not disclose locations or orders. Officials say no danger to the ships their safety is not in question. The commander will be met by friends and warned of hostilities and of the Temerrario near Buenos Aires on the Oregon’s route.
Larringa and Co owners of the Spanish steamer Buena Ventura protest the capture by the US cruiser Nashville off Key West. They claim the cargo belongs to British merchants and was damaged in Britain and that the capture was illegal without a formal declaration of war. Madrid papers call the seizure piracy and defiance of international law.
Dispatches from Key West and New York describe the capture of the Spanish freighter Pedro from Bilbao after a gunboat confrontation with the U S S New York near the Cuban coast. The Pedro, 1823 tons, was boarded by Ensign Frank Marble and placed under a prize crew as a chase continued along the coast.

A Grace Cathedral vestry member has died. No funeral arrangements are set yet, but the service is expected to be held in the near future, with a tentative date around Tuesday.
