A blaze started by faulty electric night lamp endangers lives in New York at the home of John M M Sager. Mrs Sager and three year old Lily survived after rushing to extinguish the flames. The incident began when a bulb ignited clothing and a curtain, filling the room with smoke. In another note, a Buenos Aires dispatch reports a village destroyed by an earthquake in Gen Sarmiento with three people dead.
A campaign to pave Tenth avenue from Tyler street to Lane street gains momentum with 45 property owners backing brick pavement. The plan envisions a 9 to 10 foot roadway with widening to 25 to 40 feet parkings, aiding access to Christ Hospital and improving the city’s main thoroughfare. Trustees of Bethany College weigh backing to secure an unbroken brick strip from Quincy to Lane streets.
Hot Springs grand jury refused to indict after investigating the street riot that claimed the lives of Chief Totie Toler Sergeant Goselee Detective Hart Louis Hinckle and a sheriff’s son. Sheriff Williams Coffey Williams and Deputy Spear were released on bond as testimony favored self defense in a politically charged fight.
Manila reports Gen Lawton advancing along the road between hills and a lake with Napitan and Laguna de Bay guarding, as the enemy withdraws north toward Lamwan. Troops cross Paghanjon river, reach Loneae, shells on hills, and lists of proclamations are distributed to natives.

Federal grand jury returned a true bill against William Martindale on eighteen counts with possible life imprisonment if convicted on all. Washington April 15 Secretary Alger flatly denies rumors he will resign after the war investigation. He states he will remain in his cabinet post throughout the administration unless a unforeseen disaster or health issue forces change. He authorizes the Associated Press to publish the denial and stresses confidence in serving the term.
A heated contest for two Sixth Ward council seats in Topeka includes supporters of Col J W F Hughes and rivals backing Del Hughes. Possible appointee FG Willard, Auburndale candidates J A Stepbins and J W Sigher or Myers vie as mayor Drew Lut defers appointment to the Topeka council with a May deadline. School board members for the new ward will be elected by Topeka's board of education.
Popeka land office receiver J J Hitt under Cleveland era faces civil action by United States District Attorney Lambert to recover $487.46 plus 13.0 percent shortage in disbursing accounts. Bondsmen named include Spurgeon Evans Hentig Overmyer Dennis Beeler Fitzgibbons Martis Close and Blarichard. Hitt promised to cover the deficits but has not yet done so.
