Richardson Building in Chattanooga Burns in Morning Fire
A massive blaze destroyed the Richardson building in Chattanooga between 3 30 and 6 00 am. The fire started from a furnace in the basement and climbed the elevator shaft. The watchman delayed sounding the alarm, trapping several occupants on upper floors. Two prominent men, Boydying and architect J M Patton, perished. Patton’s body remained in the ruins as rescuers searched for days. About 200 offices and four stores housed in the building were lost, with total damages around 1 200 000 and insurance near 800 000. A nearby two story structure was also destroyed and the Third National bank across the street damaged. Prominent losers include American Investment Company, Ht. C. Kingsley & Co., Chattanooga National Building and Loan, and many lawyers with papers lost. Frank Carlock, a young lawyer, was injured saving papers from his office.
