Republicans won in the Denver city election with the mayoral race going to a Republican candidate and the civil service ballot measure also carried.
Kansas returns show B P Waggener elected mayor of Atchison amid broad Republican victories. Across Chicago Missouri and Minnesota races temperance and liquor issues influenced results with Republicans winning city offices, civil service, and mayoralties. Several cities report Democratic or fusion successes, while Denver Pueblo and Ottawa tilt Republican. Women’s vote figures and recall outcomes noted in several towns as party lines held or shifted.
The Colombian Liberty Bell, gifted from World Fair nations, rang at noon with Mayor Hopkins and Superintendent Lane leading a ceremony. Desperation due to hunger drives bold thefts including daylight house looting and harassment of oystersmen families. Separately jeweler Alfonzo Van Laeys is arrested for allegedly selling a safe that did not belong to a hotel client.
Witness Sadie Davis testifies that Warden Chase visited the female department to see Susie Lou Williams, assistant matron, often in the evenings after 6. The room was locked during visits and witnesses heard the door lock and unlock. Davis describes seeing Williams in working clothes or in a wrap and notes close walking and locked arms but no direct physical contact observed.
A jury in the Taylor brothers murder case for the Meeks family has not yet reported after a long deliberation, signaling no unanimous verdict. Rumors of a guilty verdict and talks of bribery circulate as residents from Lite and Sullivan counties fear a hung jury and mob action. The rumor claims jurors were paid 1500 dollars to avoid conviction.

The jury in the State vs Detective F W Jacobs returned a verdict of not guilty after two ballots. Jacobs denied embezzling 18 worth of goods from W G McCune while acting as agent. He criticized the accusations and the pursuit as baseless. Also, John B Koet ing ex cashier of Milwaukee South Side Savings Bank was sentenced to five years for receiving deposits after insolvency. He appealed to the Supreme Court, which upheld the law as valid.
The Old Bailey filled as Oscar Wilde and the Marquis of Queensberry faced libel charges after a card with foul remarks was left at the Albemarle club. Wilde, calm and composed, denied improper acts while the Marquis defended the suit amid sharp cross examining by Sir Edward Clarke and Mr. Carson.
Henry Hamilton, a bunco man, goes on trial in district court for swindling RW Craig out of 20 dollars. The elderly victim, nearly 80, lives seven miles south of Hutchison. On a Santa Fe train last November, Hamilton asked for change for a 20 bill to obtain an express package, then fled after grabbing the money. Craig testified for the prosecution. Hamilton was captured a month ago by Santa Fe secret service man Old Mx. Craig is in town to testify.
April 3 reporting that United States Minister to Turkey Mr. Terrell narrowly escaped a shooting in Constantinople. A revolver was fired at his pursuer as police pursued the suspect who was tackled by a guard and arrested after attempting to stab the cavalary.
An elevator at Metropolitan Furniture in Sremorrey Masa fell twelve feet at noon injuring seven passengers. James H Downer and L H Walker were killed or fatally injured while Wim G Drout Stevens and Dr W Young suffered minor hurts. James Berry sentenced to one year for burglary at Bill Arnold's barber shop. Hypnotism ad promotes Bijou Treay Farmac shoes.
