A severe prairie fire swept the southwestern Shawnee county area yesterday and last night starting near Auburn at about 4 PM. Wind shifted drove the blaze four miles wide and toward Topeka before shifting again, aiding containment. Farmers fought through the night. no buildings burned though fences, bays, and hay suffered heavy damage with hundreds of posts scorched and many farmers losing up to 150 tons of hay. The fire persisted until daylight as crews worked to control and extinguish it.
