Morris Haas, who shot Francis J. Heney yesterday, died by suicide tonight in the county jail. Reports say the pistol used was hidden in his shoe before the earlier shooting, while another account claims a friend smuggled the weapon to him during confinement.
Morris Haas, the ex convict who yesterday tried to assassinate Francis Heney in the superior court, shot himself in the head in his county jail cell. A 41 caliber single shot derringer lay grasped in his hand as guards found him after a night shot. He had concealed the weapon in his shoe, and wore gaiters that hid the pistol. His wife had visited earlier with officers present. authorities noted no slip of the weapon.
Rev R B Morgan rector of Christ's Episcopal church was struck by a car this afternoon in New Haven and died tonight. He was about 55 and related to several prominent families including the Vanderbilt line through officiating at the wedding of Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt and Miss Wisie French.
President elect Taft dedicated the prison ship Martyrs monument in Fort Green park Brooklyn amid cheers. He attended the bubble ceremony marking his first public event since the election and planned to head to Washington to meet Roosevelt tomorrow.
